In 2016, animator Yeon Sang-ho<\/strong>\u2018s live-action directorial debut\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em><\/strong> became a global sensation, with critics hailing the taut zombie thriller as one of the best horror movies<\/a> of the decade. But Yeon never forgot his animation roots, directing an animated prequel to\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>,\u00a0Seoul Station<\/em>, which chronicled the beginning of the zombie plague that devastates South Korea. Yeon is planning to dive back into the animation realm again, with an animated sequel to\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>, which acts as a\u00a0prequel to his\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em> follow-up,\u00a0Peninsula<\/em><\/strong>. And though\u00a0Peninsula<\/em> just hit VOD and select theaters today, Yeon is already deep into working on this animated\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em> sequel.<\/p>\n

Yeon is already working on an animated prequel to\u00a0Peninsula<\/em>, his highly anticipated follow-up to 2016\u2019s smash hit\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>, the filmmaker revealed to\u00a0Polygon. Yeon said:<\/p>\n

\u201cA prequel to\u00a0Peninsula<\/em>: we are currently in talks about making a cartoon about the relationship between Unit 631 and Min-jung. I am hopeful that the story can be further expanded upon through the less inhibited cartoon medium.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This animated Peninsula<\/em> prequel\u00a0would be a departure from his\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em> animated prequel, which followed a different group of (far less likable) characters rather than the ones we grow attached to in the 2016 film. As such,\u00a0Seoul Station<\/em> didn\u2019t leave quite as much of an impression as\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>. By expanding on the stories of lead characters in\u00a0Peninsula<\/em> \u2014 in this case, Lee Jung-hyun\u2019s Min-jung, the mother of two young girls who rescue Gang Dong-won\u2019s protagonist Jung-seok \u2014 this animated prequel could be more compelling.<\/p>\n

Both\u00a0Peninsula<\/em> and\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>\u00a0are distinctive because they take place outside of the parameters of the typical zombie outbreak movie \u2014 for\u00a0Peninsula<\/em>, it\u2019s after the zombie apocalypse has devastated Korea, for\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>, it\u2019s on a small, claustrophobic space that gets wind of the outbreak too late. The image of a post-apocalyptic backdrop specifically app<\/a>ealed to Yeon, who got the idea while researching\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em> by touring abandoned train stations.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>, I talked a lot about a post-apocalyptic backdrop with the staff that accompanied me to the various locations,\u201d Yeon said. \u201cSo, I thought if I were to make a sequel to\u00a0Train to Busan<\/em>, I wanted to portray a devastated Korea in a post-apocalyptic movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

From that idea came the image of \u201ca young child driving a dump truck in the ruined Korea,\u201d which led to\u00a0Peninsula<\/em>. But with the prequel, Yeon will get to further explore that post-apocalyptic landscape, hopefully to better success than\u00a0Seoul Station<\/em>.<\/p>\n
