Lisa\u00a0Murkowski\u00a0(R-Alaska) is projected to win her bid for reelection to the U.S. Senate, defeating fellow Republican Kelly\u00a0Tshibaka.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press called the race just after 8 p.m. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Murkowski <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.alaska.gov\/RCV.php\">won with the state\u2019s new\u00a0ranked choice voting<\/a>\u00a0system after neither she nor Tshibaka secured more than half of first-choice votes, according to the AP. In the second round, the incumbent took the win with 53.7 percent of the vote, to Tshibaka\u2019s 46.3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski, who has served in the upper chamber since 2002, drew the ire of former President Trump after voting to convict him in his second impeachment trial. <\/p>\n<p>Trump subsequently\u00a0backed Tschibaka\u00a0in a\u00a0high-profile effort\u00a0to oust the incumbent, whom he has called\u00a0\u201cworse than a Democrat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski underscored her bipartisan record throughout her campaign \u2014 and bucked her own party last month when she announced\u00a0she\u2019d rank Democrat Rep. Mary Peltola\u00a0first on her ballot in the state\u2019s House race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Peltola was also\u00a0projected to win\u00a0her race Wednesday, fending off former Alaska Gov.\u00a0Sarah Palin\u00a0(R) and two others to hold onto the seat she won during a special election this summer following the death of Rep.\u00a0Don Young\u00a0(R-Alaska).<\/p>\n<p>The results of the Alaska race took weeks to announce due to the state\u2019s newly introduced ranked choice voting system, in which voters rank their candidates by preference. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Under the new system, a candidate wins outright in the first round of voting if he or she gets over 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate meets that threshold, a second round takes place, in which the candidate that received the fewest votes is eliminated, and the votes of those\u00a0who voted for the eliminated candidate are redistributed to voters\u2019 next choice for the seat.<\/p>\n<p>The process continues until one candidate breaks 50 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The new system allowed both Murkowski and Tshibaka to be on the midterm ballot, even though they\u2019re both Republican contenders.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The other candidate in the ring was Democrat Pat Chesbro. A fourth candidate, Republican Buzz Kelley, was on the ballot despite <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alaskapublic.org\/2022\/09\/14\/fourth-place-finisher-buzz-kelley-suspends-campaign-for-u-s-senate-backs-tshibaka\/\">having\u00a0suspended his campaign<\/a>\u00a0to endorse Tshibaka.<\/p>\n<p>With Chesbro pulling in low poll numbers ahead of Election Day, the ranked-choice system was expected to be a boost for Murkowski, as votes for the Democrat were likely to shift to the more moderate Republican in a second round, rather than to the more conservative Tshibaka.<\/p>\n<p><em>Updated at 9:18 p.m.<\/em>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
