It\u2019s one of a number of charities devoted to seniors care, including those that operate or support long-term residences, on the Veritas Foundation\u2019s 500 Fastest-growing Charities in Canada list.<\/p>\n<p>The Vancouver seniors residence landed at No. 20 on the strength of a campaign to fund a new, 224-bed facility. When the pandemic arrived just weeks after residents moved into the partially constructed building, its private rooms with ensuite bathrooms \u2014 an upgrade from ward-style accommodation \u2014 safeguarded against the virus\u2019s spread. \u201cWe only had one outbreak in 2020,\u201d Cheung says. The renovation clearly demonstrated the difference such investment can make on seniors\u2019 health and wellness, and donations rolled in.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the Peterson Group, a Vancouver real estate investment company, offered to match up to $1 million in donations to the capital campaign, citing COVID in its <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal to the public. Villa Cathay issued tax receipts for more than $776,000 in donations that year \u2014 a 16,000-per-cent increase from their take in 2016 \u2014 and generated another half million from foundations. Even if the worst of COVID is behind us, Samir Sinha hopes that geriatric care will continue to be a top philanthropic choice.<\/p>\n<p>The director of geriatrics at Toronto\u2019s Sinai Health System and the University Health Network says he was approached during the pandemic by several foundations looking to make major gifts, including a $15-million donation to Mount Sinai Hospital from the Peter and Shelagh Godsoe Family Foundation, announced in February. \u201cI just fell off my chair,\u201d Sinha says, noting such offers are rarely unsolicited. \u201cIssues of aging are becoming increasingly prominent\u201d as Canada\u2019s population and its charitable donors age, he adds. \u201cAnd I think a greater awareness of challenges facing older adults became even more prevalent during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the Veritas Foundation?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Veritas Foundation is a private charitable organization committed to the improvement of Canada\u2019s philanthropic sector. It helps individuals and organizations establish and grow their own endowments, then invests the proceeds in The Veritas Foundation Giving Fund, a donor-advised fund. It then issues grants to charitable projects based on the donor\u2019s recommendations. The Veritas Foundation writes independent monthly research reports on the sector and has developed a proprietary rating system that evaluates a charity\u2019s strategy, governance, financial performance, and impact. This report aims to show which of the country\u2019s roughly 86,000 charities are attracting the most interest from donors, based on the growth of their tax-receipted donations in the previous five years.
