Democrats will have around 213 seats, and all are expected to vote for a Democratic Speaker nominee. Republicans will have around 222 seats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy maintains confidence that he will win the Speakership, but around five House Republicans have already signaled they will not support McCarthy\u2019s Speakership bid on the floor, likely already putting him under 218 and throwing his position into dangerous territory. Several others are withholding support, too, without necessarily saying they will vote against McCarthy on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opposition to McCarthy<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Andy Biggs (Ariz.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biggs, a former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, mounted a last-minute challenge to McCarthy for the House GOP\u2019s Speakership nomination, when he got 31 votes to McCarthy\u2019s 188, and five others voted for other candidates. After the nomination, Biggs said he will not vote for McCarthy to be Speaker.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI do not believe he will ever get to 218 votes, and I refuse to assist him in his effort to get those votes,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAndyBiggsAZ\/status\/1593610088970960897?s=20&amp;t=9dCq9oKjzNv9vtgasIRqRg\">Biggs\u00a0tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He cited McCarthy\u2019s not promising to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as one reason for withholding support. On Tuesday, McCarthy\u00a0called on Mayorkas to resign, saying House Republicans will investigate and consider opening an impeachment inquiry if he does not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.)\u00a0<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cKevin McCarthy will revert to his establishment mean the moment he gets power, and that\u2019s why there are enough of us now, a critical mass, standing as a bulwark against his ascension to the Speakership,\u201d Gaetz\u00a0said\u00a0on former Trump adviser Stephen Bannon\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/v1whgea-its-puppet-show-for-kevin-gaetz-slams-mccarthy-for-flipping-his-views-to-ap.html\">\u201cWar Room\u201d show on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz additionally told reporters on Nov. 15 that he would vote for someone other than McCarthy on the House floor on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Bob Good (Va.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI will not be supporting him on Jan. 3,\u201d Good said on \u201cJohn Fredericks Radio Show\u201d on Tuesday. He added that he thinks there are \u201cmore than enough\u201d members who are \u201cresolved not to support him\u201d and deny McCarthy the Speakership.<\/p>\n<p>The freshman Virginia congressman, who ousted former Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-Va.) in a 2020 primary, previously said on the same radio show that he had confronted McCarthy about his tactics during a House GOP conference meeting before the Speaker nomination vote. Good took issue with a McCarthy-aligned PAC spending millions to support certain Republicans in primaries over others, and noted that McCarthy had endorsed Riggleman in his 2020 primary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe admitted there at the mic, though, that he spent money in these races based on who would support him for Speaker,\u201d Good said.<\/p>\n<p>Good <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Fritschner\/status\/1594756645216731148?s=20&amp;t=FTZTl-RbMTYh2qDyyp0UgQ\">has also\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0that he believes there are a \u201cdozen or so\u201d House Republicans who will oppose McCarthy on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Ralph Norman (S.C.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Norman\u2019s opposition to McCarthy centers around the budget. Norman said he asked McCarthy to adopt a\u00a0model seven-year budget\u00a0crafted by the Republican Study Committee, which included $16.6 trillion in cuts over 10 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a solid \u2018no\u2019 led me to believe he\u2019s really not serious about it,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rumble.com\/v1whd7k-norman-mccarthy-had-four-years-to-make-his-case-for-speaker-but-doesnt-take.html\">Norman\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0on Bannon\u2019s \u201cWar Room\u201d on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The slim House GOP majority, he added, provides an opportunity for hard-line conservative members to pressure McCarthy and push for their priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Norman first\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/government\/congress\/hold4th-gop-congressman-ralph-norman-says-he-wont-support-kevin-mccarthy-house\">revealed\u00a0his opposition<\/a> to McCarthy to Just the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/minutes\/congress\/11-22-2022\/more-mccarthy-opposition\/\">clarified to\u00a0Politico<\/a>\u00a0that he will vote for someone other than McCarthy to be Speaker \u2013 and will not vote \u201cpresent.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Rep. Matt Rosendale (Mont.)\u00a0<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rosendale, a freshman, has signaled opposition to McCarthy for Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to maintain the status quo, which consolidates power into his hands and a small group of individuals he personally selects. We need a leader who can stand up to a Democrat-controlled Senate and President Biden, and unfortunately, that isn\u2019t Kevin McCarthy,\u201d Rosendale <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepRosendale\/status\/1592907731329224706?s=20&amp;t=FTZTl-RbMTYh2qDyyp0UgQ\">said in a\u00a0tweet<\/a>\u00a0after McCarthy was nominated to be Speaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional McCarthy skeptics and unknowns<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Several other conservative members have indicated that McCarthy has not yet earned their support, or declined to answer questions about McCarthy\u2019s Speakership altogether.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Scott Perry (Pa.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perry, the current chair of the House Freedom Caucus, has repeatedly said that McCarthy does not have support from 218 members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s becoming increasingly perilous as we move forward,\u201d Perry said of McCarthy\u2019s position in an interview last week.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Perry has been pushing McCarthy and House GOP leadership to implement rules changes that, on the whole, would give more power to rank-and-file members and lessen that of leaders. But he is not committing to vote against McCarthy at this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not making my position known,\u201d Perry said in an interview last week. \u201cI do have an open mind, but I also see what\u2019s h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Chip Roy (Texas)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Roy has similarly said that McCarthy does not have majority support for Speaker, but has not said how he intends to vote on the House floor on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody has 218, and someone\u2019s going to have to earn 218,\u201d Roy said last week.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to also pushing for a more open process, Roy has expressed that he does not think House GOP leadership\u2019s commitments to investigate the Biden administration are aggressive enough. He is also a supporter of withholding funding unless the Biden administration ends COVID-19 vaccine mandates for the military.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Dan Bishop (N.C.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bishop said that his vote for Speaker hinges on more than rules changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it is about more now is whether somebody can seize the initiative to come up with a creative approach to sort of recalibrate how this place works in hopes of moving off the status quo and making it effective for the American people,\u201d Bishop said in a brief interview last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this moment, I\u2019m open to anyone seizing the initiative in the way that I described,\u201d Bishop said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Andrew Clyde (Ga.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I will tell you that you\u2019ll know that on January the third,\u201d Clyde said on \u201cJohn Fredericks Radio Show\u201d on Monday when asked whether he would vote for McCarthy. \u201cWe\u2019re still having negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Barry Moore (Ala.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moore said in a brief interview last week that he is waiting to see how negotiations on rules changes go, but he was not necessarily a hard \u201cno\u201d on McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won\u2019t really know until Jan. 3 how things shake out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hard-line members supporting McCarthy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not all members of the House Freedom Caucus or the more confrontational wing are united in their antagonism of McCarthy. In fact, some are strong supporters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some conservatives have suggested Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), a founding Freedom Caucus member who challenged McCarthy for GOP leader in 2018, as an alternative Speaker candidate. But Jordan, who is likely to chair the House Judiciary Committee, has thrown his support behind McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The firebrand Georgia congresswoman was once a doubter of McCarthy\u2019s ability to become Speaker, but has now become one of his most vocal supporters for the post. Greene, who has said McCarthy will have to \u201cgive me a lot of power\u201d to make the GOP base happy, said she is working to convince her fellow conservative members to vote for McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>Greene has warned that moderate Republicans could join Democrats and elect a compromise moderate Speaker, but McCarthy skeptics have dismissed that prospect as a red herring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rep. Randy Weber (Texas)<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Weber, a House Freedom Caucus member, said he is pro-McCarthy for Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s poured his heart and guts and soul out into building this conference,\u201d Weber told The Hill last week. \u201cI\u2019ve been here 10 years. \u2026 I\u2019ve never seen the conference in better shape than it is now.\u201d\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
