The economic concept explained and what happens during one.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>As prices increase and gross domestic product declines, many people worry about a potential economic downturn, also known as a recession.<\/p>\n<p>Consumer prices rose\u00a08.2% from a year earlier in September\u00a0while core\u00a0prices, which exclude volatile food and energy items, climbed 6.6% annually,  according to the Labor Department&#8217;s consumer price index.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/data\/gdp\/gross-domestic-product\">GDP, or the value of all goods and services produced in the U.S., increased by 2.6% in the quarter that ended Sept. 30,<\/a>\u00a0after dropping at an annual rate of 1.6% in the first three months of the year and 0.6% in the second three, according to the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adding to concerns, Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the U.S., warned at a conference in London in October\u00a0that a \u201cvery, very serious\u201d mix of challenges was likely to push both the U.S. and global economies\u00a0into recession by the middle of next year, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/10\/jpmorgan-jamie-dimon-warns-us-likely-to-tip-into-recession-soon.html\">CNBC reported<\/a>. That\u2019s down from 24% who believed the central bank could pull off a \u201csoft landing\u201d in October and 38% in September. The vast majority of economists believe the slump will be mild.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_mild_recession\"><\/span>What is a mild recession?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A mild recession could cost the economy 1.8 million jobs if the nation\u2019s gross domestic product, or economic output, declines 1.2%, and the unemployment rate rises from a 50-year low of 3.5% to 5.4%. The &#8220;Great Recession&#8221; lasted from December 2007 to June 2009, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreservehistory.org\/essays\/great-recession-of-200709#:~:text=December%202007%E2%80%93June%202009,longest%20since%20World%20War%20II.&amp;text=The%20Great%20Recession%20began%20in,recession%20since%20World%20War%20II.\">which was the longest economic downturn since World War II, according to the Federal Reserve.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>When is a recession going to hit?<\/strong>Next year is becoming more likely and it could be more severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_happens_during_a_recession\"><\/span>What happens during\u00a0a recession?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>During a recession, the economy shrinks as a result of a pullback\u00a0on individual spending, said\u00a0Samana.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consumption, consumer spending\u00a0makes up about 70% of the U.S. economy,&#8221; he said, explaining that during a recession, the\u00a0cutback in spending\u00a0&#8220;then feeds into overall demand for services.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From this, companies can\u00a0pull back on\u00a0the number of people they employ, further contributing to the contraction of economy activity. Unemployment often rises during recessions, and\u00a0total employment levels can\u00a0flatline\u00a0or turn negative, said\u00a0Pugliese.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, GDP growth tends to shrink\u00a0during recessions because there&#8217;s less consumer demand and fewer employees, leading to lower production of goods and services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you have fewer employees, all else equal, you&#8217;re going to potentially produce less in\u00a0a recession,&#8221;\u00a0Pugliese said. &#8220;All of these things are tied together. Most of those indicators are either slowing down in growth terms, or in many cases, contracting.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wages are also affected\u00a0by\u00a0recessions, said\u00a0Samana.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s harder to argue for wage increases,&#8221; he explained.
