Faced with this ever-increasing demand and a desire to address it in a cost-effective way, Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec is urging companies to optimize their energy consumption. It is indeed vital for businesses to start adopting energy-efficient practices and become agents of change.<\/p>\n<p>With Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroquebec.com\/business\/programs-tools\/efficient-solutions.html?utm_source=macleans-en&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=affaire&amp;utm_content=energy-efficient-businesses\">Efficient Solutions Program<\/a>, which provides financial assistance for businesses ready to lead the way in energy efficiency, adopting these practices pays off from the outset. Participants receive guidance and funding to conduct energy-efficiency analyses and implement solutions\u2014from simple measures to complex, innovative projects. The program is open to small, midsize and large companies as well as public organizations in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how two businesses have benefited from Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s Efficient Solutions Program.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fruit_dOr\"><\/span><strong>Fruit d\u2019Or<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As a grower and processor of organic cranberries and wild blueberries, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroquebec.com\/business\/programs-tools\/testimonials\/fruitdor.html?utm_source=macleans-en&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=affaire&amp;utm_content=fruidor\">Fruit d\u2019Or<\/a> prioritizes sustainable practices in its operations because its products are directly affected by the environment.\u00a0Agri-food production often requires switching between hot and cold conditions, leading to significant energy consumption and heat loss. Fruit d\u2019Or President and Founder Martin Le Moine turned to Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec for help in assessing his company\u2019s energy use.<\/p>\n<p>Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroquebec.com\/business\/programs-tools\/efficient-solutions.html?utm_source=macleans-en&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=affaire&amp;utm_content=energy-efficient-businesses\">Efficient Solutions Program<\/a> gave Fruit d\u2019Or nearly $300,000 to install heat pumps. Instead of wasting heat by venting it outside, the pumps circulate the heat generated from commercial dryers to warm their washing water in a closed-loop system for a practical and more energy-efficient solution. Fruit d\u2019Or was also eager to replace a chlorofluorocarbon (Freon) refrigeration system with a carbon dioxide system to further reduce its energy use.<\/p>\n<p>In the first year of operation, the new heat pumps alone saved Fruit d\u2019Or more than $23,000 in energy costs while also reducing their carbon emissions by 350 tonnes a year.<\/p>\n<p>However, adopting energy-efficient practices isn\u2019t just about the bottom line. \u201cMoving toward sustainable practices attracts job seekers, who are increasingly sensitive to the actions companies take,\u201d Le Moine explains.<\/p>\n<p>Improving the organization\u2019s energy efficiency wasn\u2019t easy at first. \u201cIt\u2019s very wide-ranging and the technologies evolve quickly,\u201d Le Moine says. \u201cHydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s experts helped us prioritize the projects that will yield the fastest returns.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kruger\"><\/span><strong>Kruger<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroquebec.com\/business\/programs-tools\/testimonials\/kruger.html?utm_source=macleans-en&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=affaire&amp;utm_content=kruger\">Kruger<\/a>\u2019s operations in the pulp, paper, cardboard and packaging sectors are energy intensive. A significant portion of the company\u2019s production costs stem from its energy use, with aging equipment being a notable culprit. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lied to Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroquebec.com\/business\/programs-tools\/efficient-solutions.html?utm_source=macleans-en&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=affaire&amp;utm_content=energy-efficient-businesses\">Efficient Solutions Program<\/a> and received $900,000 to maintain production at existing levels while reducing energy use, but without completely replacing existing machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Kruger upgraded old paper production machines by replacing ventilation shutters with variable-frequency drives, thereby reducing\u00a0the amount of energy the machines consumed. Other energy-efficient measures were also implemented, such as installing efficient lighting and optimizing screening, refining, pumping and air-compression processes. With these solutions in place, Kruger expects its annual energy savings to reach $153,000.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s financial assistance, Kruger has been able to implement energy-efficient solutions more quickly, leading to im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te results and putting the company on a path to reducing its carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>While saving money is a top priority, Maxime Cossette, corporate vice-president of fibre, biomaterials and sustainability at Kruger, says that adopting energy-efficient practices at his workplace is also about values. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s important that the company I work for respects and reflects my values.
