“#First-time \u2018Ozark\u2019 Emmy nominee on working with star Jason Bateman<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n This year\u2019s long list of Emmy nominees has its share of surprises \u2014 mostly regarding on-screen talent.<\/p>\n

What you likely haven\u2019t heard about are the nods for behind-the-camera talent \u2014 including Ben Semanoff, who garnered his first Emmy nomination for directing \u201cSu Casa Es Mi Casa,\u201d the game<\/a>-changing Season 3 episode of \u201cOzark\u201d in which Marty and Wendy Byrd (Jason Bateman, Laura Linney) angrily confront each other about their teetering marriage (with ugly ramifications).<\/p>\n

\u201cI was close to not submitting the episode [for Emmy consideration],\u201d says Semanoff, 41. \u201cA day or two before it was due, I turned to my wife and said, \u2018Should I submit it? Is this a waste of $250?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout a week before the nominations came out, I caught wind of a bunch of panels happ<\/a>ening around \u2018Ozark,’\u201d he says. \u201cI Googled my name and one of the first things that came up was a thread on [awards site] Gold Derby. I thought, \u2018Why did my name come up?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the staffers predicted I was going to get nominated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Remarkably, \u201cSu Casa Es Mi Casa\u201d was only Semanoff\u2019s second time in the director\u2019s chair after spending 20 years as a highly regarded, award-winning chief cameraman (A-Camera operator) on projects including \u201cCreed,\u201d \u201cCollateral Beauty,\u201d \u201cThe Leftovers,\u201d \u201cThe Night Of,\u201d \u201cBillions,\u201d \u201cThe Upside\u201d and \u201cThe Affair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had been looking for opportunities to direct for a couple of years prior to \u2018Ozark,’\u201d he says. \u201cI did a movie that Jason Bateman directed called \u2018The Family Fang\u2019 and we hit it off. He started telling me about \u2018Ozark\u2019 \u2026 and called me when it was greenlit and they were going to be [shooting] in Atlanta.\u201d Semanoff initially passed on the offer to join \u201cOzark\u201d because he wanted to stay close to home (Bucks County, Pa.) with his wife and two small children.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very gracious and e-mailed me about two months into the first season and said, \u2018I know you\u2019re probably going to pass again, but you were my first choice [as lead cameraman] \u2014 do you want to come down and join us?\u2019,\u201d Semanoff says. \u201cThe guy they\u2019d hired to operate the camera was getting an opportunity to direct on another show \u2026 so this was the perfect springboard.\u201d<\/p>\n

His big break came when Bateman, who\u2019s also an \u201cOzark\u201d executive producer, offered Semanoff the chance to direct the penultimate Season 2 episode, \u201cThe Badger,\u201d in which Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) poisons her husband, Jacob (Peter Mullan), who collapses and dies as they stroll in the woods.<\/p>\n

Semanoff says that Bateman gave him 24 hours to decide if he wanted to direct \u201cSu Casa Es Mi Casa\u201d \u2014 and, once he agreed, he took a few weeks off to prepare for the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted it to look like a rollercoaster ride, with spikes and falls in the right places,\u201d he says. \u201cThrough planning, I felt there were a lot of opportunities for the camera to be quiet, to allow the drama to present itself in an interesting way. There\u2019s a real art to the single take and I would wager that I\u2019m pretty good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He credits Bateman for making him feel comfortable in the director\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have similar sensibilities,\u201d he says. \u201cI pitched him some crazy stuff when he was directing a few episodes. What\u2019s amazing is that Jason creates an environment \u2026 much more akin to [shooting] a feature film. He empowers directors to try different things and have fun and be creative. Some directors who come to the show don\u2019t do that, but I ran with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cJason has the pull to change anything if he wants to,\u201d he says. \u201cI learned quickly that if I was planning something with him, to discuss it with him ahead of time or else it was wasted work.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been five feet away from each other for years doing this dance, with me moving the camera and giving him notes on blocking,\u201d he says, \u201cso we\u2019re very comfortable.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
