\n President Trump and his top law enforcement chief app<\/a>ear at odds over the fate of whistleblower Edward Snowden.<\/p>\n

Attorney General William Barr told the Associated Press he was \u201cvehemently opposed\u201d to pardoning Snowden \u2014\u00a0 days after Trump said he was \u201cvery strongly\u201d considering forgiving the National Security Agency leaker.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a traitor and the information he provided our adversaries greatly hurt the safety of the American people,\u201d Barr said. \u201cHe was peddling it around like a commercial merchant. We can\u2019t tolerate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snowden has been living in Russia to avoid prosecution on federal charges of government property and espionage.<\/p>\n

Trump floated a pardon for Snowden twice last week, saying those around him felt he was unfairly treated for leaking highly classified NSA documents on the agency\u2019s mass surveillance and intelligence gathering programs.<\/p>\n

If Trump were serious, it would signify a remarkable change of heart for the president, who before taking office described Snowden as a traitor worthy of execution.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not that aware of the Snowden situation. I\u2019m going to start looking at it. There are many many people, it seems to be a split decision,\u201d Trump said last weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people think that he should be somehow treated differently and other people think he did very bad things,\u201d the president went on.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
