\n Joe Biden says he will close the country down to stop the spread of the coronavirus if scientists recommend he do so.<\/p>\n

The democratic presidential nominee made the startling promise \u2014 and affirmed his resistance to defunding police \u2014 in\u00a0 joint interviews with his running mate Kamala Harris set to air on ABC News<\/a> this Sunday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would shut it down; I would listen to the scientists,\u201d Biden told ABC\u2019s David Muir, in an interview taped Friday.<\/p>\n

Biden reasoned that the key to reopening a country\u2019s economy is first gaining control over the virus and its spread. He knocked President Trump for failing to realize that \u2014 what he called a \u201cfundamental flaw\u201d of the administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives, because we cannot get the country moving until we control the virus,\u201d Biden went on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the fundamental flaw of this administration\u2019s thinking to begin with,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to keep the country running and moving and the economy growing, and people employed, you have to fix the virus, you have to deal with the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABC\u2019s Robin Roberts in a separate interview asked Biden if he wants to defund police departments, as Donald Trump claims he does.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo I don\u2019t,\u201d Biden responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the way [Trump] proposes cutting half a billion dollars out of local police forces.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook what the police need \u2014 first of all, there has to be national standards that in fact app<\/a>lies to every police department in the country. And that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do,\u201d Biden went on.<\/p>\n

If anything, police departments need \u201cmore assistance,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to defund police departments,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they need more help. They need more assistance. We have to make it clear that this is about protecting neighborhoods, protecting people \u2014\u00a0 everybody across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another clip from the Muir interview teased by ABC News, Harris said the president\u2019s personal attacks are meant to be a distraction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that there is so much about what comes out of Donald Trump\u2019s mouth that is designed to distract the American people from what he is doing every day,\u201d the California senator said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is about neglect, negligence and harm to the American people.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
