I guess what I would say, you just never know what somebody\u2019s going through. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the audience right now, you\u2019re sitting next to strangers. Somebody\u2019s mother died last week, somebody\u2019s child is sick, somebody just lost their job, somebody just found out their spouse cheated. There\u2019s all these things and they\u2019re strangers, and you just don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on with people.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mobile outerAdHatch\">\n<div class=\"ad-border\">\n<div class=\"innerAdHatch\">\n<div id=\"contentUnit300\" class=\"adUnits\" inserted=\"shortcode\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Will Smith went on to explain that it wasn\u2019t an excuse for slapping Chris Rock and described the impact his actions had on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going through something that night, you know?\u201d he said. \u201cNot that that justifies my behavior at all. I would just say, you\u2019re asking what did I learn \u2013 it\u2019s that we just gotta be nice to each other, man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard. And I guess the thing that was most painful for me is, I took my heart and I made it hard for other people. It\u2019s like, I understood the idea that hurt people hurt people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cIt was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know? All of that just bubbled up in that moment. That\u2019s not who I wanna be. You\u2019ve known me for a long time so you know me personally, so you know, but y\u2019all might not know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Will Smith revealed his nine-year-old nephew questioned him about the slap when he got from the Oscars later that night.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mobile outerAdHatch\">\n<div class=\"ad-border\">\n<div class=\"innerAdHatch\">\n<div id=\"contentUnit400\" class=\"adUnits\" inserted=\"shortcode\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI understand how shocking that was for people, man,\u201d he said. \u201cOn that stage. I was gone, dude. That was a rage that had been bottled for a really long time. I understand the pain, you know? My nephew, Dom, is nine, and he is the sweetest little boy. We came home and he had stayed up late to see his Uncle Will, and we\u2019re sitting in my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s on my lap and he\u2019s holding the Oscar and he\u2019s just like, \u2018Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?\u2019 Damn it. Why are you trying to Oprah me? It was a mess, you know?
