Last year, the 19-year-old native of Midland, Ontario, found herself in the running for the role of Autje in Sarah Polley\u2019s big-screen adaptation of Miriam Toews\u2019s searing 2018 novel, <i>Women Talking<\/i>. (Brown sped through the book in two days flat.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Months went by without so much as a post-tryout \u201cthanks, but no thanks.\u201d And then came a life-changing call. Polley was so impressed with Brown\u2019s performance that she wrote an entirely new character into the film\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>, just for her: Helena, the granddaughter to Frances McDormand\u2019s Scarface Janz. \u201cI was ecstatic to play a character who\u2019s completely original,\u201d Brown says. When <i>Women Talking<\/i> premieres this month, moviegoers are bound to take notice of Brown\u2019s unique talent: her keen attunement to her fellow actors and, like Polley, a depth beyond her years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Brown\u2019s path to stardom kicked off\u2014as it does for many future thespians\u2014with solo bedroom singalongs to the <i>Annie<\/i> soundtrack. \u201cI didn\u2019t have many friends as a kid,\u201d Brown says. \u201cSo I sang to keep myself company.\u201d In her early teens, Brown sharpened her skills on the local theatre circuit; her professional stage debut came in April of 2022, when she drew critical kudos for her portrayal of Rayisha in the Toronto production of George F. Walker\u2019s <i>Orphans for the Czar.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Brown, who was born blind, is most grateful for her first onscreen role\u2014as a warrior in <i>See<\/i>, an Apple TV+ <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> about a society that has lost its sight. Visually impaired workers were involved on all sides of <i>See<\/i>\u2019s production. There were even grooves etched into prop tables so the actors knew where to place their staffs. \u201cThe industry has come so far with respect to representation, but we\u2019re still behind when it comes to people with disabilities,\u201d Brown says. \u201cWe have to advocate for ourselves.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">One of Brown\u2019s most enthusiastic mentors is Polley, from whom Brown regularly solicits <\/span>advice over the phone. (\u201cI can just<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>text her and be like, \u2018So what am I doing?
