title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> (MIT) researchers are building\u00a0swarms of tiny robots\u00a0that have built-in intelligence, allowing them to build structures, vehicles, or even larger versions of themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The subunit of the robot, which is being developed at MIT\u2019s Center for Bits and Atoms, is called a voxel and is capable of carrying power and data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re building these structures, you have to\u00a0build in intelligence,\u201d MIT Professor and CBA Director Neil Gershenfeld said in a statement. \u201cWhat emerged was the idea of structural electronics \u2014 of making voxels that transmit power and data as well as force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The voxels makeup both the robot itself as well as the components of the thing being built, allowing them\u00a0to work together\u00a0on larger structures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could build a structure, or it could build another robot of the same size, or it could build a bigger robot,\u201d CBA doctoral student Amira Abdel-Rahman said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the research is promising, it will likely be years before we see self-replicating robot swarms, according to Gershenfeld.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers, who published a paper laying out their findings in Nature, are working with the aviation industry, car
