And finally, I got a call from [\u2018Thriller\u2019 producer] Quincy Jones\u2019 office going, \u2018Yeah, that was really Michael.\u2019 So I called him back and I\u2019m like, \u2018Aw Michael, I\u2019m so sorry! I didn\u2019t believe it was you!\u2019 He goes, \u2018It h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens all the time.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lukather would end up playing on the No. 1 smash <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oRdxUFDoQe0\">\u201cBeat It\u201d<\/a> and other tracks on the \u201cThriller\u201d blockbuster, which became the best-selling album of all time after it was released 40 years ago on Nov. 30, 1982. With seven hit singles that led to a record-setting eight Grammy Awards in 1984, the vinyl-era LP that was seemingly in every household became a cultural phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>After the solo success of 1979\u2019s \u201cOff the Wall,\u201d there was no mistaking the mission of Jackson and Jones, who was back behind the boards. \u201cThe impetus was to have every song be a hit,\u201d said Larry Williams, who played saxophone, flute and synths on the album. \u201cThat was the mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Thriller-3.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Michael Jackson\" class=\"wp-image-24834397\" to \u201csome ungodly thousands of songs,\u201d that mission was nearly accomplished: All but two of nine tracks on \u201cThriller\u201d were released as singles \u2014 including \u201cBillie Jean,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1XMvPTFzgVU\">\u201cWanna Be Startin\u2019 Somethin\u2019 \u201d<\/a> and, of course, the title track \u2014 and all of them hit the Top 10.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an achievement that even Jackson\u2019s complicated legacy \u2014 from all the child molestation allegations made against the late superstar \u2014 can\u2019t overshadow.<\/p>\n<p>After the more R&amp;B-focused \u201cOff the Wall,\u201d Jackson became a pop pioneer on \u201cThriller\u201d with a crossover takeover that \u2014 whether he was bringing the funk or headbanging with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/06\/02\/wolfgang-van-halen-valerie-bertinelli-blast-eddie-autopsy-show\/?_gl=1*1pf6lop*_ga*MTg2NzIxODY2OS4xNjMzNjQ1MjEw*_ga_0DZ7LHF5PZ*MTY2OTc2MzQ3NS4xNi4wLjE2Njk3NjM0NzUuMC4wLjA.&amp;_ga=2.241892674.1171172340.1669763496-1867218669.1633645210\">Eddie Ettel. \u201cHe really was able to cross over and open things up for other black artists actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lukather \u201cthought it was a smart move\u201d for Jackson to rock out with a guitar god such as Van Halen on \u201cBeat It.\u201d \u201cIf anybody could pull it off, it would be Michael,\u201d said Lukather,\u00a0 who \u201cplayed everything except the guitar solo\u201d on the track. \u201cEven though he hadn\u2019t really dabbled much in the harder-edged rock stuff, I know he liked it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Jackson showed his love for the Beatles when he paired up with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/11\/12\/julian-lennon-runs-into-paul-mccartney-at-the-airport\/?_gl=1*p4302i*_ga*MTg2NzIxODY2OS4xNjMzNjQ1MjEw*_ga_0DZ7LHF5PZ*MTY2OTc2MzQ3NS4xNi4xLjE2Njk3NjM1ODIuMC4wLjA.&amp;_ga=2.15277430.1171172340.1669763496-1867218669.1633645210\">Paul McCartney<\/a> on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8GB9BULxZ8c\">\u201cThe Girl Is Mine,\u201d<\/a> the first single from the record,\u201d said Lukather, who played guitar on the dream duet. \u201cWe started jamming on [Stevie Wonder\u2019s] \u2018I Was Made to Love Her,\u2019 which is buried on a tape somewhere. Michael and Paul were singing, and it was just rocking. I just kept looking around the room going, \u2018Oh my God, this is insane.\u2019 It was very cool to be a part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For \u201cHuman Nature\u201d \u2014 the fifth single from \u201cThriller\u201d \u2014 Lukather was joined by his Toto bandmates David Paich (synths), Jeff Porcaro (drums) and Steve Porcaro (synths), who also co-wrote the song. \u201cIt\u2019s basically Toto with Michael singing,\u201d said Lukather of his group that had scored its own hits, \u201cRosanna\u201d and \u201cAfrica,\u201d in 1982. \u201cIt was kind of an accident how it got on the record. Quincy heard it by accident, and Michael turned it into a smash record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams knew that \u201cBillie Jean\u201d \u2014 the album\u2019s second single, which also went to No. 1 \u2014was something special when he first heard it. \u2018I was like, \u2018Wow, this is going to be a big record,\u201d he said of the song, which was inspired after a fan made the unbelievable claim that Jackson fathered, yes, one of her twins.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Van-Halen.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Eddie Van Halen and Michael Jackson.\" class=\"wp-image-24834574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Van-Halen.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Van-Halen.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Van-Halen.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Michael Jackson rocked out with Eddie Van Halen on \u201cBeat It.\u201d<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Corbis\/VCG via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And Williams saw \u201ca Halloween phenomenon\u201d in the making with the title track. \u201cI knew that because [it featured] Vincent Price,\u201d he said of the horror-movie legend. \u201cI remember Quincy and Rod [Temperton, the songwriter] laughing about Vincent Price in the studio and what a kick they got out of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams recalled that Jones had a special nickname for Jackson \u2014 Smelly, because MJ wouldn\u2019t say \u201cfunky\u201d \u2014 that he would use during the \u201cThriller\u201d sessions. And he remembered the singer as being super shy in the studio. \u201cThere was a lot of off-color stuff going on, and Michael would just blush about every other minute about something that one of us would say, because we were unfiltered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But when it came time to record his vocals, Jackson would turn on the thrills. \u201cWhen he did his vocal takes, he would move quite a bit,\u201d said Ettel with a laugh. \u201cHe\u2019d be stomping his feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tireless moonwalking machine would also be practicing dance moves in the studio. It was all part of his relentless work ethic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a lot of talent there, of course, but really, it\u2019s the amount of work and effort he put into his craft,\u201d said Ettel. \u201cThere\u2019s those stories about how hard Joe Jackson worked the family to practice and things like that, but that\u2019s the kind of work it takes to get to the kind of level that Michael was at.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"999\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Thriller.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Michael Jackson's &quot;Thriller.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-24834586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Thriller.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Thriller.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Forty years after its release, Michael Jackson\u2019s \u201cThriller\u201d remains the best-selling album of all time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And it wasn\u2019t just Jackson who leveled it up during the making of \u201cThriller.\u201d Ettel recalled that things got so intense during one session that a speaker caught on fire. \u201cOne of them burst into flames,\u201d he said. \u201cThat just tells you something about the sound levels. You\u2019d want to get juiced up so you can be in the groove. And it was louder than f\u2013k.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that was nothing compared to all the noise that \u201cThriller\u201d made around the world after it was released. And the iconic videos \u2014 especially <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zi_XLOBDo_Y\">\u201cBillie Jean,\u201d<\/a> Beat It\u201d and the epic <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA\">\u201cThriller\u201d<\/a> \u2014 took the music to bigger heights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c \u2018Billie Jean\u2019 came on MTV and that opened it up for a lot of black artists that wouldn\u2019t normally get played,\u201d said Ettel, who experienced his own kind of stardom after the album exploded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy phone started ringing a lot with girls calling me, seeing if I could [give] them Michael Jackson\u2019s number or if Michael was there,\u201d said Ettel. \u201cMy name is on the album, and I didn\u2019t have an unlisted number or anything.
