Then, a mysterious call lit up her phone. On the line was a man, whose voice she didn\u2019t recognize, telling her that the Minister of Defense urgently needed to schedule a video call. <\/p>\n<p>The bewildered Grenier, who at the time was the financial director of France\u2019s<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessfrance.fr\/about-us-our-partners-cci-de-france\"> chamber of commerce and industry<\/a>, an organization representing the business interests of over 2 million companies, responded im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely. There, suddenly, in front of her on the screen, was France\u2019s then-Minister of Defense Jean-Yves Le Drian. <\/p>\n<p>Or so she thought.  <\/p>\n<p>Le Drian\u2019s request was simple. Le Drian\u2019s request seemed like something the chamber had the patriotic duty to get behind. <\/p>\n<p>Once the call concluded, however, Grenier couldn\u2019t help but feel weird. She called police, who were equally skeptical.\u00a0They agreed to perform a dial-in sting operation on the follow-up call, when the funds were to actually be transferred. <\/p>\n<p>With Grenier pretending to play along, cops got the dirty financial details they needed to catch the crafty perp \u2014 a man in a carefully crafted silicone mask, designed to make him <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear like the defense minister. A man, it turned out, law enforcement had been after for years.  <\/p>\n<p>Raking in more than 100 million euros between 2005 and 2017, French national Gilbert Chikli became one of the world\u2019s most successful con men, a serious pest to the European elite. Without Grenier\u2019s quick thinking, he might have stayed at large indefinitely. He remains unrepentant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA scammer tries to get a lot of money. Me, I have had money and I always will have. He exploited people\u2019s fears, often operating under the guise of catching a wealthy bank client who was funneling money to finance global terrorism. <\/p>\n<p>In the months after the London bombings of July 2005 \u2014 along with the residual shock from 9\/11 \u2014 many were quick to oblige, with few, sometimes no questions asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had an extremely calm, controlled, and friendly voice,\u201d said one victim, identified as \u201cPierre.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>And unlike the usual, easy to identify scams, Chikli went to the trouble of compiling dossiers on everyone he fooled. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe talked to me about my wife\u2019s suicide, about my children,\u201d Pierre recalled. \u201cHe knows things about me, a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Scammer-3-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Sophie Grenier was crucial in helping to catch Gilbert Chikli.\" class=\"wp-image-24844927\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Scammer-3-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Scammer-3-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Scammer-3-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Sophie Grenier was crucial in helping to catch Gilbert Chikli.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>To help him with his research, Chikli recruited fellow crooks whose job it was to learn of anything that could compromise the victims, and coerce them into just getting the money \u2014 sometimes up to 20 million euros \u2014 transferred with no questions asked. One of his associates was old flame Shirley Vacaint, who ended up in the sights of the Paris police; they ended up tapping her phone line and raiding her home. <\/p>\n<p>Chikli just so happened to call her at the time, and ended up speaking to police major Eric Moreau \u2014\u00a0the first of what would be many interactions, echoing the story of impostor Frank Abagnale, whose story was immortalized in the 2002 Tom Hanks\/Leonardo DiCaprio film \u201cCatch Me If You Can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first, Chikli tried to bribe Moreau. Details revealed in one of his phone calls to Moreau enabled the police to track down 1.2 million euros being sent from Mexico to Israel around 2007. Anyone he could hit up, he did \u2014\u00a0including the Aga Khan, an internationally known spiritual leader and wealthy prince.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow morning we wrap it up, so I would like to close this case,\u201d Chikli said in archived audio. \u201cIt\u2019s important you send me the whole amount, do you understand? It\u2019s in your interest, your highness.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In the end, Chikli worked the holy man over for 20 million euros. <\/p>\n<p>The major ripoffs went on until the early months of 2017, when a savvy Grenier couldn\u2019t help but scrutinize the deal more closely than the rest of Chikli\u2019s victims; in the end, it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of spelling and formatting errors that made her feel like something was off. They found pictures of the Le Drian mask on one of three phones Chikli was carrying. Cops also recovered evidence that he had ploys to impersonate French President Emmanuel Macron and Monaco\u2019s Prince Albert, for even bigger takes. <\/p>\n<p>Chikli, once again, was extradited to France and given seven to 11 years in prison, where he remains.<\/p>\n<p>In a farewell message, Chikli apologized to his victims, but left off with his own hubris intact. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am Gilbert Chikli, I\u2019ll always be Gilbert Chikli, and I\u2019ll leave as Gilbert Chikli.
