Jackson said he\u2019s not sure whether Tyler Perry, a name repeatedly brought up in the musical, will ever come see it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The mogul is pilloried throughout the show, as the main character, Usher, first rejects an assignment to ghostwrite a gospel play for Perry and then blows up the concept by creating caricatures of Perry characters in a family drama, complete with a gospel chorus singing \u201cAIDS is God\u2019s punishment.\u201d Jackson said he\u2019s spoken on the phone with Perry and maintains a \u201ccute, little relationship\u201d with him, but is not sure he\u2019ll want to come see that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI told him, \u2018If it\u2019s gonna stress you out, don\u2019t come,\u2019\u201d Jackson told the audience at a talkback held after the show Tuesday and hosted by Trevor Noah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Outside of the Perry storyline, the musical centers on Usher, as he struggles to write about his life and incorporate the complexities of his identity into a \u201cbig, Black, and queer\u201d Broadway show. His writing process is complicated by his own intrusive thoughts, which are brought to life on stage by an ensemble of six actors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The musical opened on Broadway in April 2022 and is now scheduled to end its run on Jan. 15.\u00a0 As the cast nears the end of the run, Jaquel Spivey, who has been playing Usher since the musical\u2019s pre-Broadway tryout in 2021, said he\u2019s learned to lean more into the uncertain fate of his character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Spivey said he used to believe Usher had reached a definitive resolution at the end of the musical, in a moment which sees him finally embrace some of his imperfections and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to finish the musical he\u2019s been trying to write. But now, Spivey said he wants to leave the question of his character\u2019s success more open ended.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI want the audience at the end of the show to wonder what happens next. I don\u2019t want you to think he\u2019s made up his mind,\u201d Spivey said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    A large part of this pivot came after Spivey learned to separate the show, which won the 2022 Tony Award for best musical, from its accolades, and the character of Usher from Jackson. Jackson, who shares several biographical traits with the lead character, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama for <em>A Strange Loop, <\/em>which had made the character\u2019s success seem inevitable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI honestly had to take Michael out of the equation after a long time. Like what happens if he doesn\u2019t win the Pulitzer? What happens if he\u2019s not nominated for a Grammy? He\u2019s still worth it. What happens if people don\u2019t like the show? He still has worth,\u201d said Spivey, who has been playing Usher since 2021 and was Tony-nominated for the role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The open-endedness is part of the reason Noah, who said he has seen the show four times, keeps coming back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cEvery single time I come, I feel like I\u2019m focusing on something different and there\u2019s a different part of the play that almost gets revealed to me,\u201d Noah said. \u201cIt is radical. It is layered. It is complicated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And that\u2019s the conceit Jackson said he\u2019s tried to create, in a show that takes on themes such as religion and homophobia, racism, colorism and body shaming within the gay community and Black male identity.
