They represent 99% of all businesses in the Union, employ around 100 million people, and account for more than half of Europe\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, business survival for SMEs has been continuously challenged since the pandemic. After suffering <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/11\/covid-19-coronavirus-pandemic-europe-business-smes-economics\/\">the consequences of the COVID crisis<\/a>, SMEs are now particularly affected by soaring energy prices, inflation, supply chain bottlenecks, and changed consumer behavior.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s especially the case in the retail, food, and restaurant sectors \u2014 among those that were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ggb.gr\/sites\/default\/files\/basic-page-files\/SME%20Annual%20Report%20-%202021.pdf\">hit hardest during the pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Join_TNW_in_Valencia\"><\/span>Join TNW in Valencia!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A survey conducted by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/glovoapp.com\/\">Glovo<\/a>, a Spanish startup that provides on-demand delivery services, found that European SMEs in these sectors are worried about their future growth prospects.<\/p>\n<p>The startup surveyed 2,049 SMEs in Bulgaria, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Romania, and the UK. Nearly 1 in 3 businesses that digitized during the pandemic \u2014 but have since stopped due to the return of in-person dining \u2014 report that they are now severely struggling.<\/p>\n<p>Comparatively, nearly half of all businesses that were already digitized before the pandemic and continue to be have experienced slow but steady growth in the past 2-3 years. They also expect significant growth in the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>And while one-in-three UK businesses see digitalization as integral to growth, two-in-three still say they need help to become technologically innovative, but partnerships with private partners are only part of the solution.<\/p>\n<p>In order to achieve the EU\u2019s ambitious <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/en\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A52021DC0118\">Digital Decade targets<\/a>, it is crucial SMEs are equipped with adequate digital skills, access to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, and sufficient funding \u2014 all of which require a supportive policy environment.<\/p>\n<p>And while <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.interregeurope.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-04\/Policy%20brief%20on%20digital%20transformation.pdf\">numerous policies and projects<\/a> are now in place, Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_22_4560\">calls<\/a> for further action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to step up the efforts to make sure that every SME, business, and industry in the EU has the best digital solutions available to them and have access to a world-class digital connectivity infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only then will SMEs and startups have a fighting chance in the future.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
