class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Some experts Friday slammed public-health officials in Los Angeles County for saying the county will likely reinstitute a local indoor-mask mandate thanks to COVID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years in, there is little evidence that mask mandates have had a significant impact on [COVID] case rates,\u201d said Dr. Margery Smelkinson, an infectious-disease scientist who specializes in influenza and COVID-19, to The Post on Friday. \u201cConsidering this unimpressive track record, it is perplexing that many health officials are willing to return to mask mandates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference Thursday, Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer announced that the county was creeping toward \u201chigh\u201d viral activity with an average of more than 2,700 new COVID infections per day \u2014 and that residents could face an indoor-mask mandate as soon as next week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is this common line of thinking that the pandemic is over and COVID is no longer of concern, but these numbers clearly demonstrate that COVID is still with us,\u201d Ferrer warned.<\/p>\n<p>But Dr. Smelkinson said she continues to be worried about the impact of such mandatory masking.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img society,\u201d she noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost Americans have already learned to live with the virus, and pandemic fatigue will ensure low compliance and a further erosion of confidence in public health officials. Called the Alliance of Los Angeles County Parents, the group calls for \u201cremoval of all unnecessary, harmful, and unjustified restrictions against children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer] continues to ignore current scientific realities,\u201d Hamill wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know there is an extremely low mortality rate associated with COVID, especially for children. We know that there are no randomized controlled trial studies with statistically significant data to support masking as a way to prevent transmission of respiratory viruses. One research document published in February 2022 by the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7106e1.htm#suggestedcitation\">CDC\u2019s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report<\/a> indicated that consistent use of a cloth face mask or N95 respirator was associated with lower odds of testing positive for COVID-19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.10.05.20207241v3.full\"> l<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.10.05.20207241v3.full\">ab study published in the journal Aerosol Science and Technology<\/a> in November 2020 demonstrated that cloth masks blocked 51% of respiratory droplets from coughing, while N95 respirators blocked 99%.<\/p>\n<p>But Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> medical analyst, shared Dr. Smelkinson\u2019s skeptical position on mandates.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/virus-outbreak-california-221202-33.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"A security guard wears a mask inside Union Station on July 28, 2022 in Los Angeles.\" class=\"wp-image-24878839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/virus-outbreak-california-221202-33.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/virus-outbreak-california-221202-33.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/virus-outbreak-california-221202-33.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>A lab study showed cloth masks blocked 51% of respiratory droplets from coughing.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c[Masks] are political weapons, not medical tools,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m pro-mask, but I\u2019m anti-mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Siegel endorsed wearing \u201ca fit-tested N95 mask\u201d in a hospital setting but said that overall mask effectiveness hinged on the wearer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was monitoring the streets [during mandates], and I don\u2019t think I ever saw anyone wearing [their mask] properly,\u201d he said. \u201c[Mask effectiveness] depends on the person knowing what they are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mask mandates, he argued, are simply demonstrations of compliance, not public safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as they take the mandates off, everyone takes the masks off!\u201d he pointed out. \u201cWhere\u2019s the public health in that? It\u2019s just a matter of obedience.<\/p>\n<p>As with Dr. Smelkinson, Dr. Siegel also expressed concerns about the unseen cost of forced masking, including \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ization problems, kids with learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A mandate] is not going to work,\u201d he concluded. \u201cIt\u2019s a bad precedent, and it shouldn\u2019t be done.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
