How? That\u2019s easy. You feed the audience news you know they will like.\u201d Yet when you \u201cdecide in advance to forego half of your potential audience, to fulfill the aim of catering to the other half, you\u2019re choosing in advance which facts to emphasize and which to downplay. You\u2019re also choosing which stories to cover, and which ones to avoid, based on considerations other than truth or newsworthiness. This is not journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture critic: The Right\u2019s Winning vs. Disney<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, the Walt Disney Co. has become embroiled in America\u2019s culture war,\u201d pushing critical race theory in its employee-training programs and radical gender ideology in its children\u2019s programming, but last week it fired CEO Bob Chapek and reinstalled former CEO Bob Iger, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/christopherrufo.com\/disney-retreats\/\">cheers Christopher F. Rufo<\/a> at his site. And in video of Iger\u2019s first townhall meeting with employees, he \u201cretreats from the company\u2019s most controversial positions and moves toward neutrality.\u201d He vows to adopt a different posture, to listen to Disney\u2019s audience and work to quiet things down. \u201cThis is an important shift,\u201d notes Rufo. Conservatives had sought to \u201cdamage Disney\u2019s brand\u201d and \u201cmake the company pay a political price\u201d to force it to \u201cdeclare neutrality. So far, it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears that the strategy is working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Housing expert: Bipartisan Path on Homeless<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf bipartisanship really were to take hold\u201d in Congress, \u201caction aimed at mitigating street homelessness would be a good place to start,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/civil-rights\/3750292-a-bipartisan-approach-to-helping-the-homeless\/\">suggests Howard Husock at The Hill<\/a>. Helping the street homeless must go \u201cbeyond housing, to include treatment of the sort that long-shuttered state psychiatric hospitals once offered\u201d \u2014 and \u201ctreatment plus housing\u201d are the goals of GOP legislation that \u201clanguished in the last Congress\u201d but deserves Democratic consideration. \u201cUnderutilized post-pandemic big-city office buildings and hotels could be converted to supportive housing . . . Policing could be invoked to clear the streets and sidewalks. Political will, as well as funding, matters.\u201d \u201cTent cities dot D.C. not far from the Capitol\u201d; assisting their \u201cunfortunate residents\u201d would show politics can \u201cmake a positive difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crypto watch: SBF\u2019s No Schlub, Just a Crook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now clear,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/layer2\/2022\/11\/30\/ftxs-collapse-was-a-crime-not-an-accident\/\">thunders CoinDesk\u2019s David Z. Morris<\/a>, that what happened at the FTX crypto exchange and Alameda Research involved \u201cconscious and intentional fraud intended to steal money from both users and investors.\u201d Honcho Sam Bankman-Fried used \u201cin-house asset[s] as collateral for loans between clandestinely related entities\u201d and handed out a total of $4.1 billion in loans \u201cincluding massive personal loans that were likely unsecured.\u201d Since FTX\u2019s collapse, he\u2019s \u201cattempted to portray himself as a well-intentioned but na\u00efve kid who got in over his head.\u201d No: \u201cThe scale and complexity of Bankman-Fried\u2019s fraud and theft appear to rival those of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff and Malaysian embezzler Jho Low,\u201d and he \u201cdeserves to share their fate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crime beat: Linking Crime to Immigration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cViolent crime is becoming common in Sweden,\u201d as it is throughout the European Europe, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2022\/12\/01\/europe_shows_a_clear_link_between_immigration_and_crime_-_like_the_one_the_us_seriously_downplays_867625.html\">report John R. Lott &amp; James Varney at RealClearInvestigations<\/a>. And an RCI analysis \u201cstrongly\u201d links the surge with immigration: \u201cEach one percentage point increase in immigrant population is associated with a 3.6 percent increase\u201d in homicides. The results echo other studies in European countries that show immigrants commit crime at higher rates than the native-born population. A 2020 Swedish study found that from 2002 to 2017 immigrants were suspected in 73% of cases involving murder, attempted murder and manslaughter. In the US, data for such an analysis is \u201crarely\u201d collected.
