The ship suffered limited damage and arrived in Ushuaia, 1,926 miles south of\u00a0Buenos Aires, the next day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with great sadness that we confirmed a guest passed away following the incident,\u201d Viking said in a statement. \u201cWe have notified the guest\u2019s family and shared our deepest sympathies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four passengers injured were treated onboard the ship by a doctor and medical staff for non-life-threatening injuries, the company said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ship itself sustained \u201climited damage,\u201d Viking said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are investigating the facts surrounding this incident and will offer our support to the relevant authorities,\u201d the company said. \u201cOur focus remains on the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew, and we are working directly with them to arrange return <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245281014.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Damage is seen on the bottom windows of the Viking Polaris ship after a wave hit it on Thursday.\" class=\"wp-image-24882924\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245281014.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/GettyImages-1245281014.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Damage is seen on the bottom windows of the Viking Polaris ship after a wave hit it on Thursday.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rogue waves, also known as \u201cextreme storm waves\u201d by scientists, are greater than twice the size of surrounding waves and often come unexpectedly from directions other than prevailing wind and waves, according to the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/roguewaves.html\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Suzie Gooding, who was on the ship when the incident h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened, told WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina, that it felt like the ship had struck an iceberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything was fine until the rogue wave hit, and it was just sudden. Shocking,\u201d she said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know if we should get our gear ready for abandoning ship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viking said it has canceled the ship\u2019s next scheduled\u00a0departure, the Antarctic Explorer, slated to sail from Dec. 5-17.
