If only resurrecting Marilyn Monroe for director Andrew Dominik\u2019s <em>Blonde<\/em> had been that simple. \u201cAndrew said to me, \u2018Don\u2019t just put Marilyn\u2019s makeup on Ana [de Armas]. You have to find Marilyn within Ana,\u2019 \u201d says makeup department head Tina Roesler Kerwin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    With only a few weeks to prepare for the Netflix film, Kerwin and hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh\u2019s first day of production was a photo shoot creating the still images that would show Marilyn\u2019s rise to fame throughout the film. It was while putting together the more than three dozen looks that they were able to practice perfecting the two-and-a-half-hour process of transforming de Armas into Monroe. \u201cA lot of it was erasing before we could rebuild,\u201d says Kerwin. \u201cHer brows didn\u2019t have the same shape, so I reshaped them. Her eyes didn\u2019t have the same shape, so the lashes were brought up a little and the shadow was brought down a little. And her top and bottom lips were reshaped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    It was also in these photo sessions that they discovered that a bald cap would not work. \u201cRealizing the wigs would change multiple times, potentially in a day, a regular bald cap not only is not comfortable, it couldn\u2019t have withstood the removing and re-gluing,\u201d says Kerwin, who came up with the idea of using silicone to cover the hairline. \u201cThe silicone transfers are thin and transparent. We had those custom-made to Ana\u2019s head shape, and those would go on before any of Jaime Leigh\u2019s beautiful wigs.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:1000px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((749\/1000)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/BLONDE_STILLS_537169-EMBED-2022.jpg?w=1000\" alt=\"Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(min-width: 87.5rem) 1000px, (min-width: 78.75rem) 681px, (min-width: 48rem) 450px, (max-width: 48rem) 250px\" height=\"749\" width=\"1000\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\"><span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                                    <cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    While the still images were shot using off-the-shelf wigs with the fronts removed and customized, the three wigs used the most throughout the film were custom-made to fit the dark-haired de Armas. \u201cYou design everything, from the right texture of hair and colors to how dense you want it, what shapes you want around the hairline, the little baby hairs or, in [Marilyn\u2019s] case, possibly some bleach breakage from lightening her hair,\u201d says McIntosh. \u201cYou are designing it from the ground up to mimic that head of hair that everybody knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    One of the greatest challenges for Kerwin was capturing off-hours Marilyn. \u201cIt was tricky because if I pulled the makeup back too far, then you either got young Norma Jean or you got Ana,\u201d she says. \u201cOnce she had established that iconic look, there was only so far that I could pull it and still have it look like Marilyn.\u201d That is where the wigs did some of the heavier lifting. \u201cI could push it a little further, having more of Marilyn\u2019s natural textures show through, or mess it up, whatever would help balance that a little bit more,\u201d says McIntosh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    To take Monroe into her final decade, Kerwin created wrinkles using a stippling technique. \u201cIt\u2019s really not a comfortable process for the actors, whether it\u2019s putting it on or taking it off, but if you do it right, you get really subtle, natural-looking aging,\u201d she says. Around that same time, Monroe also changed her hair color to platinum, further emphasizing the effects of her hard life. \u201cWe all know platinum is a difficult color to wear,\u201d says McIntosh. \u201cIncorporated with the makeup that Tina did, it helped us shift into a different Marilyn period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Kerwin describes the shoot as a moving train, and the tight schedule meant occasionally second-guessing what they were putting onscreen. \u201cThe scene where she\u2019s singing \u2018I Wanna Be Loved by You,\u2019 we didn\u2019t think we had it right,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was one of those moments where if we had a little more time with it, we might have felt more comfortable with it, but we were just putting it together the best way we could \u2014 and then it got on camera and it looked incredible. It\u2019s one of our favorites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Although most of their time was spent on de Armas, Kerwin and McIntosh also prepared what Dominik lovingly referred to as the \u201cside dishes.\u201d Thankfully, the director was less concerned with making actors Bobby Cannavale and Adrien Brody look like Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, respectively, than he was about capturing their essence. \u201d \u2018The Playwright\u2019 and \u2018The Ex-Athlete\u2019 are their actual character names,\u201d says McIntosh of the Miller and DiMaggio roles in the film. \u201cI didn\u2019t feel the pressure from Andrew to make that matchy-matchy. Kerwin worked on his sideburns, while McIntosh tamed the mane. \u201cHis hair\u2019s very curly naturally, so he schooled us on that, like, \u2018This is what you\u2019re going to need to do,\u2019 \u201d says McIntosh. \u201cFor him, we wanted to just get the shape similar, have a similar texture, have it parted on the same side and get him into that Joe DiMaggio feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    To create Arthur Miller, McIntosh\u2019s challenge was Miller\u2019s receding hairline. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to completely destroy Adrien\u2019s hairline for his personal life, so we did a little thinning. We also styled it at the roots with a wet gel so it would separate more and you could see more scalp. We didn\u2019t push it as far as Arthur Miller\u2019s [hairline], but we got it into the realm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Watching the results of their labor, Kerwin and McIntosh are still in disbelief that they completed the gargantuan task. \u201cThe first time you see it, you\u2019re like, \u2018My career is over,\u2019 because you watch it with the narrative of, \u2018That day we had to rush this,\u2019 or, \u2018We had to do that in the back of a van,\u2019 \u201d says Kerwin. \u201cMaybe [after] the third time, you actually go, \u2018OK, I might work again.\u2019 \u201d The two are, in fact, collaborating again on the John Wick spinoff <em>Ballerina<\/em> \u2014 with de Armas, moreover \u2014 where their experience on <em>Blonde<\/em> is paying dividends. \u201cWe dance around a head really well together,\u201d says Kerwin. \u201cWe move in a good rhythm. And we laugh a lot, that\u2019s for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>This story first appeared in a December stand-alone issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
