bandanna, scarf or gas mask, we now know that any mouth and nose covering is better than none at all when it comes to coronavirus prevention.<\/p>\n<p>So, keeping our health in mind, Dr. Rita Linkner, an NYC-based dermatologist, is now talking to her patients about more than how to \u201ctreat your skin properly underneath the mask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith coronavirus, our new existence for the foreseeable future will involve wearing masks,\u201d she tells The Post. \u201cIt\u2019s important to know how to take care of your mask,\u201d which, in turn, will help keep rashes and other skin problems at bay, she says.<\/p>\n<p>The type of cloth used for washable face masks is key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to know that the material \u2026 should be made out of non-synthetic, cotton fabric,\u201d Linkner says.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because studies have shown that cotton is both trusted to filter many potentially harmful particles, while also being breathable and gentle on the most sensitive skin.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Soap_or_sanitizer\"><\/span>Soap or sanitizer?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Linkner doesn\u2019t think bleach or other disinfectants are necessary for cleaning masks, especially since they\u2019re worn on your face. Just as a safe and gentle soap is the most effective tool against COVID-19 for your hands, it\u2019s also your first line of defense in the laundry.<\/p>\n<p>Soap molecules have a hydrophilic and hydrophobic end: The former side attracts water and repels fat, while the latter end attracts oil and repels water. Meanwhile, COVID-19 cells are enveloped in a lipid layer \u2014 a fat, in other words. So, when the hydrophobic tail of a soap\u00a0molecule attempts to evade water during washing, it will actually wedge itself into the lipid layer that surrounds the coronavirus and, essentially, rip the pathogen to shreds.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hand-washing_your_cloth_mask\"><\/span>Hand-washing your cloth mask<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cloth masks have the advantage of being both hand- and machine-washable, according to Linkner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way to \u2026 clean your cloth masks is to clean it like we would our bra and underwear,\u201d she says, with a gentle soap that won\u2019t irritate sensitive facial skin. She recommends The Laundress line of products, which are eco-friendly and, in some cases, nontoxic.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that water temperature doesn\u2019t make a difference either, so don\u2019t burn your hands in scalding water for the sake of sanitizing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Machine-washing_your_cloth_mask\"><\/span>Machine-washing your cloth mask<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For those who don\u2019t hand-wash their undergarments, Linkner says the washing machine works just as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrow [the face mask] in your lingerie bag \u2026 on the delicate cycle on cold water and let it wash and then let it air dry,\u201d she says. While 100% cotton could be tumble-dried, blended fabrics won\u2019t tolerate the high heat for too many washes, so be sure to read about your particular mask\u2019s fabric-care instructions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Removing_odor_from_your_mask\"><\/span>Removing odor from your mask<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For a midday mask refresh, Linkner also suggests a nontoxic laundry spray to help trap odors that collect in cloth fibers throughout the day \u2014 thanks mostly to your stinky breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all notice we smell our own breath and that the inside of the mask is something that needs to be refreshed,\u201d says Linkner, who recommends The Laundress\u2019 Fabric Fresh spray \u2014 a nontoxic deodorizer made of just water, essential oils, fragrance and alcohol \u2014 for a quick-drying effect.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dealing_with_%E2%80%98maskne\"><\/span>Dealing with \u2018maskne\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s mask   acne \u2014 get it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been seeing a lot of what we call perioral dermatitis, which is as if acne and rosacea had a baby,\u201d says Linkner. \u201cIt gives you this red, bumpy, rashy skin in the smile lines on the lower third of the face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regularly washing your mask should help prevent clogged pores, but adopting the right face-cleansing routine can help fortify your skin\u2019s defenses against the \u201cnew environment\u201d on your face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake sure you are using an exfoliative, non-oil-based cleanser, and then a glycerine-based moisturizer,\u201d says Linkner, adding to wait a good 15 minutes before donning a mask to allow those ingredients to seep deep into your skin.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_about_paper_masks\"><\/span>What about paper masks?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s simple, according to Linkner: Toss them when you\u2019re done \u2014 since they can\u2019t be cleaned \u2014 but be mindful if you intend to wear a mask for more than a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>Going out for the day?
