But as Sorokin has stepped more firmly into the No. 1 job, and into Vezina Trophy contention, the spotlight has gone off Semyon Varlamov, who seamlessly passed the top spot on the depth chart off to his friend and fellow Russian national.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Sunday\u2019s 3-0 victory against Chicago was only the ninth start Varlamov has made this season. At the end of the night, it was also his first shutout since April 1 of this year, against the Rangers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y to get a shutout. For the goalie, it\u2019s a big deal,\u201d Varlamov said. Then he smiled and, half-jokingly, added: \u201cDoesn\u2019t happen very often with me, especially lately. I\u2019m very happy I was able to get one today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In truth, the Islanders did not give Varlamov all that much to do against a hopeless Blackhawks team \u2014 he stopped all 21 shots he saw. Still, after putting up a .916 save percentage and looking vulnerable at points over his first eight tries in net, a first shutout of the season was a nice milestone to achieve.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/1446801078.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Islanders\" class=\"wp-image-24895265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/1446801078.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/1446801078.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Semyon Varlamov makes a save for the Islanders<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Islanders raised eyebrows both at the last trade deadline and during the offseason when <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> manager Lou Lamoriello decided to keep Varlamov at a price tag of $5 million annually, on the basis that having two strong goaltenders was pivotal to success over 82 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Right now, like the rest of Lamoriello\u2019s non-moves over the summer, that one looks pretty solid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was solid, steady, calm,\u201d coach Lane Lambert said. \u201cJust in position all night long. He made some big saves when he needed to. Full marks for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t hurt that for the second straight game, the Islanders\u2019 defensive-zone structure in front of their netminder looked improved and they gave up fewer than 25 shots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think we\u2019re closing quicker. We\u2019re not necessarily thinking, I guess,\u201d Matt Martin said. \u201cIt\u2019s coming a little more natural, guys are jumping in and closing, sacrificing the body, blocking shots when they have to. \u2026 Once you get thinking the game out of the way and you just play, it all falls into place better.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>Cal Clutterbuck and Kyle Palmieri, both dealing with upper-body injuries, remained out.
