Specifically, between locations where there is a train alternative that takes less than 2.5 hours.<\/p>\n<p>When the French government suggested the measure in 2021 as part of the country\u2019s Climate Law, it was contested by the Union of French Airports (UAF) and the European branch of the Airports Council International (ACI Europe).<\/p>\n<p>This led to an investigation by the European Commission, which gave the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32022D2358&amp;from=FR\">final approval<\/a> on Friday \u2014 making France the first EU member state with a short-haul flight ban.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Join_TNW_in_Valencia\"><\/span>Join TNW in Valencia!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Initially, the measure will affect routes between Paris Orly airport and Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux. It will be valid for three years and then it\u2019ll be reassessed by the Commission.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frances_flight_ban_is_a_significant_step_for_Europe\"><\/span>France\u2019s flight ban is a significant step for Europe.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unlike many parts of the world, Europe already has thousands of kilometers of dedicated high-speed railway, with the leading countries in this regard including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>This enables the continent to increase its railway use, as part of the EU\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/green-deal\/fit-for-55-the-eu-plan-for-a-green-transition\/\">Fit 55<\/a> plan to reduce transport\u2019s CO2 emissions, part of which is reducing dependence on aviation.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer.be\/sites\/default\/files\/CER%20Essay_DB%20Final.pdf\">the Community of European Railway<\/a> (CER) rail transport is responsible for less than 1% of EU transport emissions thanks to its already high degree of efficiency and electrification.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, it\u2019s also one of the most energy efficient modes, accounting for only 2% of the Union\u2019s total energy consumption in transport, while carrying 13% of goods and 7% of passengers.<\/p>\n<p>CER also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer.be\/sites\/default\/files\/publication\/CER%20TEN-T%20Exhibition_Imagining%20a%20Future%20HSR%20Timetable.pdf\">estimates<\/a> that a future trans-European network of high-speed rail (at 200km\/h) would significantly cut <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> times, further encouraging the passengers\u2019 transition to this mode of transport.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, passengers could travel between Amsterdam and Berlin in 3h 17m and between London and Brussels in 1h 56m.<\/p>\n<p>A number of projects that are underway indicate that things are going to the right direction. Germany has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.railtech.com\/infrastructure\/2021\/12\/29\/germanys-plans-for-the-trans-europ-express-2-0\/\">proposed<\/a> the revival of the Trans Europe Express, aiming to offer fast connections between it and other European countries by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The Czech Republic is also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.railtech.com\/infrastructure\/2021\/01\/15\/first-czech-high-speed-line-to-be-designed-by-czech-french-british-consortium\/\">working together<\/a> with the French railway industry to create new 350km\/h lines that will reduce travel times between Prague, Brno, and Ostrava with Eastern Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Poland.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the Dutch railway company NS <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nltimes.nl\/2022\/12\/05\/new-ns-intercity-cut-30-minutes-amsterdam-brussels-route?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=facebook\">has unveiled<\/a> a faster 200km\/h Intercity train that could cut 30 minutes off the Amsterdam to Brussels route from 2024 \u2014 which currently takes 2h 52m.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, more countries will follow suit which will enable Europeans to opt for cleaner and more sustainable journeys without sacrificing time.
