Since his vision did not do that, it caused backlash, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we\u2019re living in a time where it\u2019s important to present women as empowered, and they want to reinvent Marilyn Monroe as an empowered woman. That\u2019s what they want to see,\u201d\u00a0said Dominik. \u201cAnd if you\u2019re not showing them that, it upsets them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is kind of strange, because she\u2019s dead. The movie doesn\u2019t make any difference in one way or another,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they really mean is that the film exploited their memory of her, their image of her, which is fair enough. But that\u2019s the whole idea of the movie. It\u2019s trying to take the iconography of her life and put it into service of something else, it\u2019s trying to take things that you\u2019re familiar with, and turning the meaning inside out.
