He narrowly won a runoff in 2021 and he received more votes than Walker a month ago on Election Day but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/results.enr.clarityelections.com\/GA\/115465\/web.307039\/#\/summary\">not enough to avoid a runoff because of a third-party candidate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican football legend, who was endorsed during the GOP Senate primary and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election by former <strong>President Trump<\/strong>, was battered by personal controversies throughout the campaign, and his ties to Trump may have hurt him more than helped during the past month, The Hill\u2019s Hanna Trudo and Al Weaver write.<\/p>\n<p>Warnock has barnstormed counties around Atlanta and worked to chip away at rural areas held by the GOP. He also stumped heavily during the fall holiday season, an investment that his campaign argues stands in contrast to Walker, who has been less visible on the trail in recent weeks. An overwhelming majority of Black voters recently indicated in a CNN poll that they planned to cast their ballots for Warnock, the Democrat, rather than Walker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201c[Black voters] are offended that the Republican Party is attempting to impose their version of what a Black leader should be on the Black community,<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of Black PAC, speaking about the Georgia runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the state is not alone in trying to finish the 2022 election business nearly a month after Election Day. <strong>Arizona<\/strong> on Monday certified its election results following GOP challenges (The Hill).\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><em>\u201cArizona had a successful election<\/em>,\u201d said Secretary of State <strong>Katie Hobbs<\/strong> (D), who was on the ballot on Nov. 8. \u201c<em>But too often throughout the process, powerful voices proliferated misinformation that threatened to disenfranchise voters. The ambitious to-do list would not only make this year\u2019s lame-duck among the most momentous in modern memory but also enable Pelosi to go out championing some of the same pet issues that have defined her long leadership career.<\/p>\n<p>Her allies in Congress say that\u2019s not a coincidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4<\/strong> <strong>ADMINISTRATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rock-bottom relations between the U.S. and Russia are bleeding into and fracturing one of the most fragile and preserved areas of the relationship \u2014 strategic communication over their nuclear weapons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As The Hill\u2019s Laura Kelly reports, Russia\u2019s rejection of a meeting with U.S. officials this week in Egypt \u2014 for nuclear talks related to a soon-to-expire treaty \u2014 is raising the risk that Washington is losing its ability to communicate with Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister <strong>Sergey Lavrov<\/strong> called it \u201cabsurd\u201d that Moscow would hold talks with Washington on nuclear stability, criticizing the U.S. as using Ukraine to try to destroy Russia.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor now, we aren\u2019t hearing any meaningful ideas,\u201d<\/em> Lavrov said during his annual press conference, referring to nuclear talks. <em>\u201c[But] if there will be proposals from the president [Biden] and from other members of his administration, we\u2019ll never shy away from contacts.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon secretly modified advanced rocket systems it sent to Ukraine to make the weapons unable to fire into Russia and escalate the war. Since June, the U.S. has supplied Kyiv with 20 of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), but the weapons are uniquely modified so they can\u2019t fire long-range missiles, U.S.<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-altered-himars-rocket-launchers-to-keep-ukraine-from-firing-missiles-into-russia-11670214338\"> officials told The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration said the modifications were a precaution necessary to reduce the risk of a wider war with Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>President Biden<\/strong> announced the Defense Department was shipping the HIMARS and ammunition to Ukraine at the end of May, he said they would be used only for defense and the administration was <em>\u201cnot going to send to Ukraine rocket systems that strike into Russia\u201d<\/em> (The Hill).<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/12\/04\/pentagon-industry-struggle-to-arm-ukraine-00072125\">Politico<\/a>: \u201cWe haven\u2019t got this figured out just yet\u201d: Pentagon, industry struggle to arm Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Homeland Security Secretary <strong>Alejandro Mayorkas<\/strong>, in a speech in Washington on Monday, said the United States faces \u201ca new kind of warfare\u201d that he described as a byproduct of global interconnectedness, emerging technologies and economic and political instability that mean national security and homeland security are interwoven (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberscoop.com\/dhs-mayorkas-cybersecurity\/\">CyberScoop<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mayorkas on Monday extended immigration protections for Haitians in the United States, granting work permits and deferral from deportation to Haitians in the country as of Nov. 6 (The Hill).<\/p>\n<p>White House national security adviser <strong>Jake Sullivan<\/strong> and other U.S. officials met on Monday in Brazil with President-elect <strong>Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/strong> and invited him on behalf of Biden to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/brazils-lula-mulls-us-trip-before-inauguration-2022-12-02\/\">visit Washington<\/a> (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-nsc-chief-visits-brazils-lula-discuss-democracy-climate-change-2022-12-05\/\">Reuters<\/a>). Lula will be inaugurated on Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"><strong><u>IN FOCUS\/SHARP TAKES<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4<\/strong><strong> INTERNATIONAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Explosions rocked two <strong>Russian<\/strong> airbases far from the frontlines with <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> on Monday as Kyiv appeared to launch a preemptive strike on bombers that the Kremlin has used to try to cripple the country\u2019s electrical grid.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian defense ministry confirmed the attacks, claiming two of its warplanes had been damaged when they intercepted two Ukrainian drones. The strike represented an unprecedented Ukrainian operation deep inside Russia to disrupt the Kremlin strategy of provoking a humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine on the verge of winter (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/dec\/05\/explosions-russia-airbases-far-from-ukraine-frontline-bombers\">The Guardian<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Russia, meanwhile, has fired a barrage of missiles at targets across Ukraine for the eighth time in eight weeks. Significant disruptions to the power grid were reported, mainly in the east. But the strikes, which came nearly two weeks after the last, may have done less damage than on previous occasions.
