The 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive end had gotten his feet wet in the league with three sacks, 11 quarterback hits and 10 tackles for losses as a rookie.<\/p>\n<p>On life\u2019s surface, he seemingly had everything going on.<\/p>\n<p>After the season, Thomas was back at his parents\u2019 home in Dallas visiting, and they had plans to meet his sister, Ella, for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>It was a lunch that never took place.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019 24-year-old big sister, Ella, a bright light in his life and his best friend, took her life the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom and I spoke to her the night before,\u2019\u2019 Thomas recalled over the phone on Tuesday. \u201cWe were planning to all get lunch tomorrow and that lunch never h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened. Ella died by suicide early that morning. We had made plans to go get lunch and talk about her work and what was next for her, told her that we loved her and went to bed thinking there was going to be a tomorrow.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow took on a much different meaning for Thomas, the Jets\u2019 defensive end.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"764\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/Solomon-Thomas.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Solomon Thomas\" class=\"wp-image-24923139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/Solomon-Thomas.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/Solomon-Thomas.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/Solomon-Thomas.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Solomon Thomas<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Corey Sipkin<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After a period of time to grieve the loss of Ella, Thomas made it his mission in life to raise mental health awareness and put an end to the stigma around suicide, a taboo subject no one wants to touch.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Thomas used his platform as a professional athlete to launch \u201cThe Defensive Line Foundation,\u2019\u2019 which is dedicated to ending the epidemic of youth suicide and make it OK for people to talk about it. Thomas formed the foundation with his parents and his cousin.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s because of this kind of fierce dedication off the football field that Thomas was chosen by the Jets as their nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award \u2014 the most prestigious off-the-field honor in the league.<\/p>\n<p>The award recognizes an NFL player for outstanding community service activities off the field, as well as excellence on the field. Each of the league\u2019s 32 nominees were announced Tuesday. The winner will be announced Super Bowl week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh man, this is such a blessing and a rewarding feeling,\u2019\u2019 Thomas said of being recognized as the Jets nominee. \u201cThe honor of being named that by my peers and co-workers means the world. They see the work I put in, they see how much I care about the community, they see how much I want to give back and how much I want to make an impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe it\u2019s the highest honor in the NFL outside of any playing accolades. I hold it in high regard.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"200\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/playlist.megaphone.fm\/?e=NYPH6280704988&amp;light=true%20\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Giving back has been a part of Thomas\u2019 DNA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something my parents always instilled in my sister and I,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cEvery Christmas growing up in Dallas, we\u2019d always wake up at 5 a.m. and feed the homeless at the Austin Street Shelter. It\u2019s what my parents always wanted us to do.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Thomas said his sister\u2019s suicide \u201cincreased immensely\u2019\u2019 his \u201cpassion and drive\u2019\u2019 to want to give back and focus on mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEver since Ella died, I understand the huge epidemic we have in the U.S. with mental health and suicide, how big a problem we have,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cMy family tried our hardest in a lot of areas, and we really do believe we did everything we could for Ella. Learning more about mental health, there are always things where you think, \u2018Well, maybe I should have done this or that,\u2019 but that\u2019s also just how it is to deal with suicide, because you have all the \u2018ifs ands and buts.\u2019 \u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a big focus of The Defensive Line \u2014 to help people with those ifs ands and buts, and to let people know that \u201cit\u2019s OK not to be OK.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was far from OK after Ella\u2019s suicide, saying, \u201cMy deepest depressions occurred after losing Ella, for sure, but in my life I\u2019ve struggled with anxiety.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He recalled Robert Saleh, his current head coach with the Jets and then his defensive coordinator with the 49ers, reaching out to him as soon as the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of Ella\u2019s death became public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was depressed and holding it all in and Coach Saleh reached out after Ella died and told me he\u2019s here for me if I need anything, that he\u2019s got my back,\u2019\u2019 Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas also credited 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> manager John Lynch for having a profound effect on helping him cope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoach Shanahan made generous donations in honor of Ella to AFSP [American Foundation for Suicide Prevention],\u2019\u2019 Thomas said. \u201cJohn Lynch did the same thing and he encouraged me to seek the help of therapy, which became a big part of my life and really saving me.\u2019\u2019\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
