It\u2019s getting so bad,\u201d said Monica Ortiz, the store manager at GNC on Flushing\u2019s Main Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve lived in the area for 30 years and I never felt so unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz said she\u2019s worked at the health and nutrition store for the last two decades, but that the number of robberies has gotten worse over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t see that situation before. The way how it is now \u2014 never,\u201d she told The Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The area has had to contend with 288 reported robberies for the first 11 months of 2022, an increase of 113% from the same time last year, according to NYPD statistics.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/flushing-crime.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"NYC police vehicle\" class=\"wp-image-24932121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/flushing-crime.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/flushing-crime.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/flushing-crime.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>New York City\u2019s crime wave has seeped into a quiet pocket of Queens known for heavy foot traffic.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Wayne Carrington<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The increase was especially pronounced over the past four weeks, with 30 robberies compared to 11 in the same 28-day period in 2021.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Grand larcenies, meanwhile, were up to 1,400 so far this year compared to 828 tallied between January and November 2021, for a 69% increase.<\/p>\n<p>A high-ranking police source told The Post that the area \u201cwas struggling,\u201d as workers and residents complained of increased attacks and palpable fear.<\/p>\n<p>A 74-year-old security guard at a Marshalls on College Point Boulevard \u2014 part of the The Shops at SkyView mall \u2014 was assaulted in October by two thieves who pushed him inside the store and took his bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many people stealing from other people,\u201d\u00a0the guard, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Post by phone Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Other workers inside the Shops at Skyview said crime is an everyday occurrence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s thieves that come in every day and trying their luck,\u201d said Fred, a security guard inside the Nike clearance store. \u201cThat\u2019s not even just here. That\u2019s throughout the whole mall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fred, who declined to use his last name, added: \u201cThere\u2019s always people stealing. We had to put a security guard in here for that reason,\u201d Ortiz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside in here, we had one person come here to steal. When I told her to leave, she just pushed me and went out running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning of the year one crook stole $1,700 worth of collagen, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe emptied two shelves. Now we close the store at 8 and are afraid to go out at night when it\u2019s dark. We all feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As The Post spoke to the guard at the mall Wednesday afternoon, two police officers were seen outside the Marshalls texting on their phones, before patrolling the Nike store.<\/p>\n<p>An off-duty cop moonlighting as a Duane Reade security guard said there has been an influx of New York\u2019s Finest on the street amid the rise in crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see all the new cops out because of the increase in grand larceny and petit larceny in the area,\u201d he said, declining to give his name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see it across the city. People pretty much walk into the store and walk out. It hasn\u2019t been a secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to New York state\u2019s controversial 2019 bail reform measures \u2014 which eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanor and nonviolent felony cases \u2014 for emboldening thieves. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of people who take advantage of bail reform, where they basically come and shop and leave with two bags of stuff,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey tell the store workers \u2018you can\u2019t touch me\u2019 as they walk out. They tell you \u2018arrest me and I\u2019ll be out in a few hours.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cPerps in the city are very vocal about how they\u2019ll just get released. It\u2019s sad they are right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A manager at Flushing Optical Inc. on Main Street said she was glad to see extra cops in the area after two men ran off with Cartier sunglasses worth $4,000 last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted to try them on. We should at least see somebody.
