With government funding expiring at the end of next week on Dec. 16 and no concrete compromise in sight, it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears all but certain that lawmakers will have to pass a short-term extension as they try to reach a broader full-year funding agreement (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/06\/politics\/government-funding-defense-bill\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>While the language for the omnibus spending bill has yet to be released, lawmakers on Tuesday debuted draft language of the other key piece of legislation, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>House Democrats delayed action on the bill following an eleventh-hour push from Black lawmakers for an accompanying vote to protect voting rights. Legislators had reached a deal on the $847 billion defense legislation Tuesday night, and it was expected to sail through the House with bipartisan support when it hit the floor on Wednesday. But the plan hit a snag when members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) demanded simultaneous action on a separate measure to enhance the 1965 Voting Rights Act (The Hill).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/winners-losers-congresss-ndaa-fight\">The Washington Examiner<\/a>: The winners and losers of Congress\u2019s NDAA fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/858-billion-ndaa-2023-233729465.html\">Yahoo Finance<\/a>: What\u2019s in the NDAA for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Senate conservatives led by outgoing National Republican Senatorial Committee (NSRC) Chairman <strong>Rick Scott<\/strong> (Fla.), as well as Sens. <strong>Ted Cruz<\/strong> (Texas) and <strong>Mike Lee<\/strong> (Utah) are ramping up the pressure on GOP leaders in the House and Senate to go along with a long-term stopgap spending bill to freeze spending into 2023, when Republicans will be in control of the lower chamber, writes The Hill\u2019s Alexander Bolton.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives secured a victory this week by pressing for the defense authorization bill to remove the COVID-19 vaccine mandate on military service members, which Democrats agreed to Tuesday. Now they\u2019re flexing on the omnibus bill \u2014 which will fund the government \u2014 and appear to be gaining traction as Senate Minority Leader <strong>Mitch McConnell<\/strong> (R-Ky.) floated the idea of a short-term spending bill as a possible necessity at his Tuesday leadership press conference.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Senate Democrats, meanwhile, cemented a major victory Tuesday night with the reelection of Sen. <strong>Raphael Warnock<\/strong> in the Georgia runoff, securing the party a 51-49 majority in the chamber, which will reduce reliance on <strong>Vice President Harris<\/strong> as a tiebreaker for votes.<\/p>\n<p>A visibly exuberant Senate Majority Leader <strong>Charles Schumer <\/strong>(D-N.Y.) on Thursday celebrated Warnock\u2019s reelection, calling him \u201ca unique man with a great future.\u201d He said the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, as well as public hearings from the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection Capitol helped turn voters in Democrats\u2019 favor (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/12\/07\/georgia-runoff-live-updates-emhoff-antisemitism\/#link-QH4CL2IV2BBGNBJQPQHZFAOWXU\">The Washington Post<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe public began to realize how far right these MAGA Republicans had gone,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Schumer told reporters. <strong><em>\u201cPeople said, \u2018Wow, these MAGA Republicans are serious about turning the clock all the way back.\u2019 \u2026 I think [the Jan. 6 hearings] played an important effect because people didn\u2019t just read about something that happened once, but every night they saw on TV these hooligans, these insurrectionists being violent, beating up police officers.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Analysts on both sides of the aisle are still seeking the full picture of what led to Democrats\u2019 better-than-expected performance in the midterms. While Republicans blame the GOP\u2019s losses on former<strong> President Trump<\/strong> and poor GOP candidates, many Democrats argue that their candidates\u2019 wins came down to their party\u2019s messaging, writes The Hill\u2019s Julia Manchester.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democrats defied expectations up and down the ballot in 2022 despite facing historic headwinds and other challenges going into the midterms. Throughout the year Democrats braced for losses while Republicans tried to tie <strong>President Biden<\/strong> and his party to rising inflation, violent crime and the flow of migrants across the U.S. southern border.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Herschel Walker\u2019s<\/strong> loss in Georgia has Republicans wondering what the party can do differently during the 2024 cycle when the terrain is much friendlier, The Hill\u2019s Al Weaver reports.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Chief on the list: improve \u201ccandidate quality,\u201d as McConnell put it over the summer, followed by the inability to look beyond the 2020 election results and Trump\u2019s continuing presence. There is no expectation that during the lame duck session this month Congress will take up an assault weapons ban, which was enacted as part of a 1994 crime bill and then expired in 2004 (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/12\/07\/joe-biden-gun-violence-vigil-00072938\">Politico<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pentagon<\/strong>: The U.S. on Tuesday approved $425 million in arms sales to Taiwan for spare parts for F-16s and other systems (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wokv.com\/news\/us-approves-425\/XMHRKNAR4S7HYDWRVUZWVGG6XA\/\">WOKV<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"><strong><u>IN FOCUS\/SHARP TAKES<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4<\/strong><strong> INTERNATIONAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President <strong>Volodymr Zelensky<\/strong> is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/person-of-the-year-2022-volodymyr-zelensky\/\">Time\u2019s Person of the Year<\/a> for 2022, the magazine announced Wednesday. Musk, who has himself emerged a popular cultural figure among conservatives for aggressive pushback against his critics in the news media, has in recent weeks rolled back the platform\u2019s content moderation policies which Republicans have long asserted are biased against them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s penchant for reshaping Twitter in a way that angers his critics came to a head last week, when the eccentric billionaire shared with an independent journalist a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of documents about the company\u2019s previous content moderation procedures, seemingly in a bid to show bias at the highest level of the company\u2019s leadership against the political right before his arrival.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/12\/7\/23498580\/apple-end-to-end-encryption-icloud-backups-advanced-data-protection\">The Verge<\/a>: <strong>Apple<\/strong> will finally be adding end-to-end encryption to iCloud backups, the company said as part of a major set of security announcements on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland Gov. <strong>Larry Hogan<\/strong> (R) has barred state workers from using the video sharing platform <strong>TikTok<\/strong> because of security concerns tied to its Chinese owners, ByteDance. In a Tuesday News release, Hogan \u2014 who also banned the state from using <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> from several other Chinese firms \u2014 said the banned entities present an <em>\u201cunacceptable level of cybersecurity risk to the state,\u201d<\/em> and may be involved in acts such as <em>\u201ccyber-espionage, surveillance of government entities, and inappropriate collection of sensitive personal information.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u200b\u200b\u201cThere may be no greater threat to our personal safety and our national security than the cyber vulnerabilities that support our daily lives,\u201d<\/em> Hogan said in the statement (The Hill and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/security\/maryland-bans-use-tiktok-huawei-chinese-russian-products-rcna60382\">NBC News<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hogan is not alone in his concerns about the app\u2019s handling of user data. Rep. <strong>Ken Buck<\/strong> (R-Colo.) had hoped to attach his bill to prohibit federal employees from downloading or using the app on government-issued devices to the fiscal 2023 defense authorization measure, but the language didn\u2019t make it into the final bill. Newsroom employees and other members of The NewsGuild of New York say their last contract expired in March 2021 and bargaining has dragged on. The union announced last week that more than 1,100 employees would stage a 24-hour work stoppage starting after midnight unless the two sides reach a contract deal. The NewsGuild tweeted Thursday morning that workers \u201c<em>are now officially on work stoppage, the first of this scale at the company in 4 decades. Harper, the historic Supreme Court arguments on election rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4<\/strong><strong> PANDEMIC &amp; HEALTH<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The organization that has led the global effort to bring COVID-19 vaccines to poor and middle-income countries will decide this week whether to shut down that project, ending a historic attempt to achieve global health equity, while tacitly acknowledging that the effort fell short of its goal.<\/p>\n<p>The program, known as Covax, has delivered 1.7 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses to developing countries in challenging circumstances. But it was hindered by fierce vaccine nationalism in wealthy nations and a series of missteps that undermined demand for the shots (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/06\/health\/covid-vaccines-covax-gavi.html\">The New York Times<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>With no monoclonal antibody treatments available to fight the coronavirus, vulnerable populations may be at even higher risk this winter as COVID-19 cases start rising after the Thanksgiving holiday. There aren\u2019t currently any monoclonal antibodies on the horizon to replace those that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revoked authorization for, but there are potential antiviral drugs in the works that could help fight off infections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute developed a \u201cdecoy\u201d drug that mimics the receptor on the surface of cells that the virus needs to bind to in order to infect the cell. This drug is still in early stages of development and would need to go through clinical trials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another drug, developed by Shionogi, has received emergency authorization in Japan.
