When the stock market rebounds next year, as is expected by many investment-bank strategists, those smaller companies may outperform.<\/p>\n<p> Below is a screen of analysts\u2019 favorite small-cap stocks for 2023, culled from the S&amp;P Small Cap 600 Index<br \/>\n        SML,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599868\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.07%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which requires that companies be profitable for inclusion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Great_divide\"><\/span>Great divide<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p> Following a stock-market rally from mid-October through November, stocks have since been sliding. Recession fears are mounting and the Federal Open Market Committee is gearing up for another interest-rate increase on Dec. 14.<\/p>\n<p> Strategists at BNP Paribas led by Greg Boutle, head of U.S. equity and derivatives strategy, reviewed 100 years of market-crash data and concluded investor sentiment would bottom in 2023. They are now close to a low, and only slightly higher than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, the weighted forward price-to-earnings ratio for the S&amp;P Small Cap 600 Index is now 12.7, down from 15.5 a year ago, according to FactSet. (The forward P\/E for the S&amp;P 500 has declined to 17.2 from 21.4 a year ago.)<\/p>\n<p>Since the stock market can be expected to rally amid a recession in anticipation of a decline in interest rates and a return to economic growth, investors may well be in for an accelerated rebound for small-caps.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to ride the small-caps, if you expect a market recovery, might be to buy shares of an exchange traded fund, such as the SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap ETF<br \/>\n        SLY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200749058\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.13%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       the \u00a0iShares Core S&amp;P Small Cap ETF<br \/>\n        IJR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208653303\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.07%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       or the Vanguard S&amp;P Small-Cap 600 ETF<br \/>\n        VIOO,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208323004\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.97%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Analysts_favorite_profitable_small_companies\"><\/span>Analysts\u2019 favorite profitable small companies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Some money mangers benchmark their small-cap ETFs or mutual funds to the Russel 2000 Index<br \/>\n        RUT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598147\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.19%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       but that index isn\u2019t selective. In fact, 40% of Russell 2000 companies were unprofitable for their most recent reported fiscal quarters. Only 22% of the S&amp;P 600 were unprofitable, according to FactSet.<\/p>\n<p>Standard &amp; Poor\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/spdji\/en\/documents\/additional-material\/sp-smallcap-600-brochure.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">criteria for initial inclusion<\/a>\u00a0in the S&amp;P Small Cap 600 Index includes positive earnings for the most recent quarter and for the sum of the most recent four quarters. <\/p>\n<p>Taking the idea of profitability further, we screened the S&amp;P 600 as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Covered by at least five analysts polled by FactSet \u2014 271 companies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Positive consensus earnings-per-share
