David Paterson has it right: Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 plan to force far more psych evaluations of street homeless who seem seriously mentally ill \u201cnot only will help to keep [dangerous] individuals off the streets, it\u2019s going to help the individuals themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams himself was clear: \u201cWithout that intervention, they remain lost and isolated from society, tormented by delusions and disordered thinking. They cycle in and out of hospitals and jails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the plan announced Nov. 29 is a work in progress: The city will need more psychiatric-hospital beds to execute it at scale, for example. But, as Adams says, \u201cThe starting point was for us to say, \u2018We\u2019re not accepting this anymore.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The usual suspects rushed to call it \u201ccriminalization of mental illness,\u201d since cops will sometimes need to force people in for professional evaluation. But they\u2019re not <em>arresting<\/em> these folks, let alone sending them to Rikers, and Adams says it won\u2019t be police-driven. <\/p>\n<p>Look: A half-century of deinstitutionalization has left street madmen and -women experiencing psychotic episodes in public. It\u2019s obscene to leave them free but unable to meet their basic needs \u2014 food, shelter and clothing \u2014 with the illness itself preventing them from realizing they need help.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The homeless man just found stabbed to death at the West 4th Street station is just one example of how heartless the self-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed \u201chomeless advocates\u201d truly are.<\/p>\n<p>As Dr. Paul Appelbaum, a Columbia professor of psychiatry, medicine and law, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nynmedia.com\/news\/2022\/12\/ask-experts-will-eric-adams-mandate-involuntarily-hospitalize-mentally-ill-persons-work\/380558\/\">told City &amp; State<\/a>, the policy can bring \u201ca reduction of criminalization rather than an increase in it,\u201d as it can prevent \u201cfurther criminalization of people with mental illness.\u201d How is it humane to leave them free until they do something that <em>does<\/em> send them to Rikers?<\/p>\n<p>NYPD brass ordered officers to <em>start <\/em>implementing the new policy Friday. Yes, cops will get more training in how to do it, so they\u2019ll likely begin with only the most obvious cases. Kathy Hochul has already started reversing her predecessors\u2019 policy of eliminating them). The city will likely need more supportive housing, too, so the homeless have somewhere to go after evaluation and treatment besides back to a makeshift encampment.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of throwing rocks, advocates for the homeless mentally ill should work with City Hall on closing the loopholes in Kendra\u2019s Law that make it hard for families to get treatment for a loved one, as well as amending HIPAA so family aren\u2019t shut out of treatment, care and case-management.<\/p>\n<p>Living on the street or in jails and prisons is a rotten substitute for mental-health treatment. As Paterson also said, Adams\u2019 initiative is \u201cwhat we should\u2019ve been doing the last 15 or 20 years.\u201d Indeed.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
