At least 488 people have been killed since the demonstrations began in mid-September, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that&#8217;s been monitoring the protests. Another 18,200 people have been detained by authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s Mizan <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> agency, under the country&#8217;s judiciary, alleged Rahnavard had stabbed two security force members to death Nov. 17 in the city of Mashhad and wounded four others. The agency said the execution took place on Monday morning, in public, in Mashhad.<\/p>\n<p>Footage aired on state TV showed a man chasing another around a street corner, then standing over him and stabbing him after he fell against a parked motorbike. Another showed the same man stabbing another im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely after. The assailant, which state TV alleged was Rahnavard, then fled.<\/p>\n<p>The Mizan report identified the dead as &#8220;student&#8221; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-middle-east-577c596775fb9a78d78107004d29d0f9\" data-ylk=\"slk:Basij, paramilitary volunteers under Iran's Revolutionary Guard\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Basij, paramilitary volunteers under Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guard<\/a>. The Basij (ba-SEEJ\u2019) have deployed in major cities, attacking and detaining protesters, who in many cases have fought back.<\/p>\n<p>A heavily edited state television report aired after Rahnavard&#8217;s execution showed clips of him in the courtroom. In the video, he says he came to hate the Basijis after seeing video clips on social media of the forces beating and killing protesters.<\/p>\n<p>The Mizan report accused Rahnavard of trying to flee to a foreign country when he was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Mashhad, a Shiite holy city, is located some 740 kilometers (460 miles) east of the Iranian capital, Tehran. Activists say it has seen strikes, shops closed and demonstrations amid the unrest that began over the Sept. 16 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/middle-east-iran-arrests-tehran-56c37c03a96701de7043e127f0eda279\" data-ylk=\"slk:death in custody of Mahsa Amini\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">death in custody of Mahsa Amini<\/a>, a 22-year-old woman who had been detained by Iran&#8217;s morality police.<\/p>\n<p>Mizan said Rahnavard was convicted in Mashhad&#8217;s Revolutionary Court. The tribunals have been internationally criticized for not allowing those on trial to pick their own lawyers or even see the evidence against them.<\/p>\n<p>Rahnavard had been convicted on the charge of \u201cmoharebeh,\u201d a Farsi word meaning \u201cwaging war against God.\u201d That charge has been levied against others in the decades since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and carries the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>From Brussels, the EU foreign ministers expressed dismay at the latest execution. Finland\u2019s foreign minister said that he also called his Iranian counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>Iran is one of the world\u2019s top executioners and typically executes prisoners by hanging.
