But, for startups and businesses, this apathy is actually an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>First off though, the data. According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gowlingwlg.com\/en\/insights-resources\/reports\/2022\/the-immaterial-world\/\">a report<\/a> from law firm Gowling WLG, 10% of UK consumers aren\u2019t interested in the metaverse, and 20% don\u2019t expect it to become mainstream. Alongside this, people in the UAE (43%) are over five times more excited to spend time in the metaverse as those from the UK (8%) are.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Join_TNW_in_Valencia\"><\/span>Join TNW in Valencia!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is far from the first survey that looks at the UK\u2019s opinion of the metaverse. In September, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/business.yougov.com\/sectors\/technology\/2022-uk-us-metaverse-report\">YouGov released a report<\/a> comparing the attitudes of UK and US consumers to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. In it, researchers found that close to 40% of people are uncertain about or adverse to the metaverse, the report pointing out that those most negative about the technology are \u201clargely older generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_metaverse_opportunity\"><\/span>The metaverse opportunity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While there\u2019s undoubtedly a negative feeling towards the metaverse, it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears this is massively tied up with confusion.<\/p>\n<p>In Gowling WLG\u2019s report, 41% of people in the UK said they don\u2019t really understand the metaverse. While in YouGov\u2019s, 43% of those in the UK have no awareness of the technology, and only 37% of respondents are confident in describing what it is.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively, around half of the population still don\u2019t know a damn thing about the metaverse.<\/p>\n<p>This raises an interesting point. While there are some people who feel completely negative about the metaverse, they tend to be older generations who most likely wouldn\u2019t adopt the technology anyway.<\/p>\n<p>For everyone else, there\u2019s a big degree of uncertainty about it, which could be feeding into the bad blood. There are enough people that, if they\u2019re engaged with correctly, could become enthusiasts for the metaverse. The question then, is how this happens.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Changing_the_public_perception_of_the_metaverse\"><\/span>Changing the public perception of the metaverse<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe metaverse is likely to become more of a thing in the UK when there\u2019s a good app and tech that makes it feel accessible for all, and not some elitist, tech-wizards only concept,\u201d\u00a0Max Kraynov, Group CEO of entertainment app company\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fun.co\/\">FunCorp<\/a> told me.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the \u201cridiculousness\u201d of things like NFTs and huge VR headsets make people feel alienated from the metaverse. What the technology needs to attract the masses is \u201ca user-friendly app\u201d that\u2019s appealing to the populace at large.<\/p>\n<p>This focus on content is echoed by Stefan Hauswiesner, the CEO and co-founder of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reactivereality.com\">Reactive Reality<\/a>, an AR company. He told me \u201cthe biggest roadblock to metaverse adoption is the lack of content,\u201d covering everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> interactions, to shopping and work environments.<\/p>\n<p>From this, it\u2019s clear that if the metaverse is to thrive in the UK, it needs to have better software. But, according to Mike Rhodes \u2014 the CEO and Founder of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consultmyapp.com\/\">ConsultMyApp<\/a> \u2014 this revolution needs to expand to hardware too.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that, \u201cin its purest form,\u201d people should be able to step in and out of the metaverse at will. Wim Van Thillo \u2014 CEO of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pharrowtech.com\/\">Pharrowtech<\/a> \u2014 pointed out that \u201ctruly immersive metaverse experiences depend on near-flawless network performance.\u201d He continued, saying that these virtual worlds need \u201cbroadband speeds well over 1Gbps (with latency less than 10 milliseconds),\u201d or performance will suffer.<\/p>\n<p>And the median network speed in the UK currently? <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airband.co.uk\/uk-internet-speeds-from-past-to-present\">50.4Mbps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Understanding_the_publics_metaverse_apathy\"><\/span>Understanding the public\u2019s metaverse apathy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there are also cultural elements at play regarding the public perception of the metaverse in Britain. The UK is well known for its pessimism, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/08d13d12-2a96-4020-88c9-eb5fb666559a\">with recent reports<\/a> highlighting that only 38% of the country feel positive about the future.
