These include biomarkers for cancer, decontamination for pandemic management, energy storage, quantum or semiconductor components, resilient agriculture, space tech, and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/new-european-bauhaus.europa.eu\/index_en\">New European Bauhaus<\/a> initiative.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Join_TNW_in_Valencia\"><\/span>Join TNW in Valencia!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The remaining \u20ac613 million will cover innovations without the requirement of a specific topic.<\/p>\n<p>EIC\u2019s work program for the coming year arrives with three more significant objectives: to increase the flow of talent into deep tech startups, to further support female innovators, and to facilitate the collaboration between private and public procurers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EICs_funding_is_a_significant_but_small_step\"><\/span>EIC\u2019s funding is a significant, but small step<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To date, EIC\u2019s support has yielded a number of impressive results. First off, its portfolio of companies have achieved a combined valuation of over \u20ac40 billion, including 12 unicorns and 112 centaurs.<\/p>\n<p>The European Innovation Council has also managed to incentivize over \u20ac10 billion in follow-on private sector investments. Add to that a \u20ac100-million support for the commercialization of ground-breaking ideas. And we can expect the coming year\u2019s funding to result in even greater push of the European tech industry.<\/p>\n<p>But although \u20ac1.13 billion seems like a gargantuan amount of money, in reality, it\u2019s not nearly enough. As a reference reference, private investment in deep tech companies in the UK <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/technation.io\/a-decade-of-uk-tech\/#key-statistics\">reached $8.5bn<\/a> in 2021 alone \u2014 allowing for the sector\u2019s exponential growth.<\/p>\n<p>And if \u2014 in a hypothetical scenario \u2014 we were to divide EIC\u2019s funding equally among the 27 members of the bloc, each country would basically end up with about \u20ac42 million from that \u20ac1.13 billion. Combine that with the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stateofeuropeantech.com\/\">slowdown the European tech industry has seen in 2022<\/a>, and it\u2019s clear that public investment represents an integral part in securing innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Europe has a high concentration of tech companies, a skilled workforce, and the required infrastructure to become a tech-powerhouse, but it is being held back in some respects by a lack of adequate support.<\/p>\n<p>Both the EU and local governments need to further finance upcoming tech startups if the continent is to compete with the leading players in China and the US.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
