I don\u2019t know what to buy. Everything is so expensive,\u201d said Valerie Barkley, 71, of Fort Greene, as she shopped for groceries Tuesday in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt affects me but what am I going to do? I don\u2019t understand what h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened. It\u2019s terrible. They\u2019ve gone crazy,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>At Harlem\u2019s Food Universe, a 60-year-old woman named Marie said the price hikes have been so bad that she had to cut back on home utilities in order to afford groceries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sit at home, don\u2019t put on my heat, I put on extra clothing, sit in the dark, things that don\u2019t need to be plugged in aren\u2019t plugged in,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFor breakfast say I was going to buy French toast, eggs and ham, that used to be like $7, it\u2019s now almost $20.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Harlem residents Deneshia McIntosh, 38, and her friend Marsha Robinson, 36, were shopping at Trader Joe\u2019s and comparing prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were things that we wanted to buy today that we put back because the price was just outrageous, specifically eggs,\u201d McIntosh said.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was at another store in Yonkers the other day and the price of a medium dozen of white eggs was $5.69 cents. For white eggs. Not even brown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yvonne Daley, a 60-year-old Crown Heights retired legal secretary, told The Post she had been cutting corners as she scoured the shelves at Stop and Shop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cut out the bacon. I used to get salmon sliced that I eat with my bagel, I don\u2019t do that anymore,\u201d Daley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFish I don\u2019t eat. It\u2019s super expensive. I love salmon. Now it\u2019s $5. Bacon went up, eggs went up and the cheese went up,\u201d said Eddie, a deli worker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The deli once paid $48 for 30 dozen boxes of eggs. Now they pay $110, which he said was the \u201clowest [price] you find right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cup of Joe to wash down breakfast was also putting a dent in New Yorker\u2019s pockets. One pound of ground roast coffee was $4.82 a year ago compared to $6.36 today, and bodega owners had no choice but to pass on the increase to customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey always complain,\u201d Eddie said of his customers. \u201cEven if you raise it by 50 cents, the customer always complain.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The complaints came as investors celebrated a slowed rate of inflation Tuesday, which had increased by only 0.1% last month, according to the Consumer Price Index.<\/p>\n<p>Prices across the board were up 7.1% compared to the same month one year ago, but the increase was less than the 7.3% gain that economists were expected.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Channel, a Senior Economist at LendingTree, explained that a myriad of factors were affecting the cost of breakfast, including lingering supply chain issues, bad weather in places that are producing the food, and the war in Ukraine, which is one of the world\u2019s major grain producers.<\/p>\n<p>Another potential issue was corporate greed and opportunism, the economist told The Post over the phone Tuesday, confirming Marie from Harlem\u2019s suspicions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood companies are also reporting record profits, and I think there is maybe some argument to be made that they\u2019re probably raising prices a little bit more than what they need to, just because consumers have shown that they\u2019re willing to accept these price increases,\u201d said Channel, 28.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/breakfast-inflation.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Inflation dipped slightly to 7.1% in November, according to the latest numbers.\" class=\"wp-image-25000237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/breakfast-inflation.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/breakfast-inflation.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/breakfast-inflation.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Inflation dipped slightly to 7.1% in November, according to the latest numbers.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Matthew McDermott<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However there was reason to hope that New Yorkers could some bring home more bacon to the breakfast table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that there is hope for things to turn around,\u201d Channel added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the overall inflation picture starts to come down, I think we\u2019ll start seeing people being less likely to, you know, put up with significant price increases. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd certainly demand is already falling across the board, in part because of what the Federal Reserve is doing in raising interest rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inflation was already down from it\u2019s 9.1% June peak, and President Biden celebrated the two point decline Tuesday, while warning that a return to normal rates of around 2% was \u201cgoing to take time\u201d and that there may be \u201csetbacks along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opera singer Roberto DiPelesi, 69, sang an optimistic tune as he stocked up on groceries at Trader Joes on the Upper West Side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love to cook because I come from a family of chefs so I do prepare everything myself. And I don\u2019t buy processed things in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>. So that of course is less expensive than buying prepared meals but it\u2019s definitely gone up. But it\u2019s been going up, not just recently, it\u2019s been going up for the past five, six years,\u201d DiPelesi said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever we\u2019re experiencing here in this country it\u2019s much worse in other places and people most likely making much less money,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it will level off at some point but it\u2019s going to take time.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
