have slammed the payments giant for its debanking policies of late, with one co-founder calling the freezing of funds \u201ctotalitarian,\u201d while another compared it to an episode of Black Mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Despite becoming\u00a0crypto-friendly\u00a0in recent years, the payments tech giant has caught a lot of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/554929-consortium-news-paypal-seizure-thoughtcrime\/\">headlines<\/a> and pushback over its de-platforming practices, which reportedly involve a rather abrupt process of freezing funds, fines, and frosty negotiations to unlock the accounts of its users for varying reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Thiel, who co-founded PayPal in 1998 and served as its CEO until 2002\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/what-the-hell-happened-to-paypal\">suggested<\/a> to The Free Press (TFP) on Dec. 14 that the company\u2019s vision has significantly shifted away from its initial goal of giving global citizens greater control over their money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the online forms of your money are frozen, that\u2019s like destroying people economically, limiting their ability to exercise their political voice,\u201d Thiel noted, adding that: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere\u2019s something about destroying people economically that seems like a far more totalitarian thing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thiel is colloquially referred to as the \u201cDon\u201d of the famous \u201cPayPal Mafia,\u201d which is a group of founders and former employees \u2014 such as Elon Musk \u2014 that have since gone on to found or work at other major tech companies. <\/p>\n<p>Fellow PayPal Mafia member and the firm\u2019s first COO David Sacks has also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidsacks\/status\/1478831627992121344?lang=en\">spoken<\/a> out <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/get-ready-for-the-no-buy-list\">against<\/a> PayPal\u2019s deplatorming practices over recent years as well.<\/p>\n<p>In talking with TFP, Sacks argued that PayPal, under the leadership of current CEO Dan Schulman, is trying to cash in on the woke culture movement by banning people with opposing views. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CEO [Schulman] has got like every woke award you can win,\u201d Sacks said, adding: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a symbiotic relationship\u2014he implements their agenda, and, in exchange, they give him awards, and that furthers advancement up the corporate totem pole of woke capitalism.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To list just some of PayPal\u2019s notable deplatformings, it has shut down the accounts tied to the censorship-free focused Freedom Phone startup, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> website Consortium News, the Free Speech Union <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/thepost\/paypal-cancels-fsu-and-the-daily-sceptic-accounts\/\">and<\/a> lockdown sceptic blog The Daily Sceptic.
