Notably missing from the sit-down were Jada Pinkett Smith \u2014 the subject of Rock\u2019s Oscars joke that led Smith to confront the comedian \u2014 and her mom, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, who both typically co-host <em>Red Table Talk<\/em> with Willow Smith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Over the course of the 35-minute episode, Smith described the difficult emotions he felt while wearing the shackles and chains similar to those worn by slaves in the era depicted in the fact-based film. <em>Emancipation<\/em> stars Smith as Peter, a slave who escapes to the North and joins the Union Army, and whose scars from a near-fatal whipping are depicted in a photograph that helps strengthen the abolitionist movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cOnce you\u2019ve experienced those things, they go into the same banks as your actual memories,\u201d he said of wearing chains as Peter. \u201cYou don\u2019t have a separate place for acting. Your brain and your body recognizes it the same way it recognizes actual memories. You have nightmares about it the same way, so it\u2019s all of that kind of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Smith recalled that his turn as a con artist in the 1993 film <em>Six Degrees of Separation<\/em> was \u201cthe only other time in my career where I got lost, where I went too far with a character.\u201d He then clarified, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say I went too far with Peter \u2014 I just lost track of how far I went. I got twisted up in there a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The actor said that \u201cwhen you go that one click too far, Will Smith disappears, and then what happens is, psychologically, you go farther and farther into Peter, and you don\u2019t realize that \u2018you\u2019 are slipping away, and then it\u2019s over, and you go back, and you look for you, and you\u2019re gone. It\u2019s a hard thing to explain, right? So what happens \u2014 you play these characters, and when you play them long enough, it\u2019s like moving to another country and speaking another language. If you speak the other language long enough, you\u2019ll start to lose your native tongue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He explained that it can feel \u201cterrifying\u201d to find himself becoming immersed in a character he\u2019s playing: \u201cIt\u2019s blissful out there to be in a scene, and you have that moment on camera where you forget, and you\u2019re lost. It\u2019s blissful, except when they say \u2018cut,\u2019 and you reach back for you, right? [Pantomimes reaching behind himself and grasping at air.] It\u2019s a weird thing, but I got out there to that terrifying, blissful edge.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Fuqua previously told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> that the Oscars followed a particularly tough <em>Emancipation<\/em> shoot. \u201cIt\u2019s really hard to release a character who\u2019s been brutalized and called the N-word every day \u2014 constantly, every day \u2014 and still be the nicest person in the world,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Training Day<\/em>\u00a0helmer said at the time. \u201cThat, I know. So no excuses for anyone or anything, but I can say that he\u2019s a good man, and I hope that people can forgive him and that we can move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Smith also recalled in his <em>Red Table Talk<\/em> conversation that co-star Ben Foster, who plays the man overseeing the slave camp, did not address Smith at all throughout the shoot in order to remain in character. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cFox six months, he didn\u2019t speak to me,\u201d Smith said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t make eye contact with me. He didn\u2019t say a word. He didn\u2019t acknowledge me for six months.\u201d Smith credited his co-star\u2019s focus with setting the tone for the film and added about Foster\u2019s final day on set: \u201cI look over at Ben \u2014 it\u2019s his last day \u2014 and he says, \u2018Nice to meet you, Ben.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    During an interview with Trevor Noah on an episode of <em>The Daily Show<\/em> that aired last month, Smith spoke extensively about his infamous Oscars moment, saying that \u201churt people hurt people.\u201d He also said, \u201cTrust me, there\u2019s nobody that hates the fact that I\u2019m human more than me.
