Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), would prohibit individuals from downloading or using TikTok on phones, tablets, and computers issued by the US government or government corporations. <\/p>\n<p>The bill passed after no senators objected to the measure. It must still pass the House before heading to President Biden\u2019s desk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTikTok is a Trojan Horse for the Chinese Communist Party. It\u2019s a major security risk to the United States, and until it is forced to sever ties with China completely, it has no place on government devices,\u201d Hawley said in a statement. \u201cStates across the U.S. are banning TikTok on government devices. It\u2019s time for Joe Biden and the Democrats to help do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least five states \u2014 Maryland, Nebraska, South Carolina, South Dakota and Texas \u2014 have banned government agencies from using TikTok over security concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>New York lawmakers also introduced a bill this week that would ban state employees and contractors from downloading the app onto government-issued electronics.<\/p>\n<p>At the federal level, another anti-TikTok bill was introduced in Congress this week that seeks to ban the social media platform from the US altogether.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) introduced the Averting the National Threat of Internet Surveillance, Oppressive Censorship and Influence and Algorithmic Learning by the Chinese Communist Party (ANTI-SOCIAL CCP) Act on Tuesday .<\/p>\n<p>Rubio and Gallagher\u2019s bill would ban \u201call transactions from any social media company in, or under the influence of, China, Russia and several other foreign countries of concern,\u201d such as Iran, North Korea and Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok\u2019s parent company, Beijing-based ByteDance LTD, is required under Chinese law to disclose its data to the Chinese Communist Party, according to Rubio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about creative videos \u2014 this is about an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day,\u201d Rubio <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2022\/12\/rubio-gallagher-introduce-bipartisan-legislation-to-ban-tiktok\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cWe know it\u2019s used to manipulate feeds and influence elections. We know it answers to the People\u2019s Republic of China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TikTok claims it has never shared U.S. user data with the CCP and wouldn\u2019t if asked.<\/p>\n<p>A TikTok spokesperson <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/senate-passes-bill-banning-tiktok-from-government-devices-11671066166?mod=djemalertNEWS\">told<\/a> the Wall Street Journal that Hawley\u2019s legislation \u201cdoes nothing to advance U.S. national security interests.
