The measure will keep the government funded at current levels through Dec. 23. Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>ropriations Ranking Member <strong>Richard Shelby<\/strong> (R-Ala.) didn\u2019t wade into details about the broader spending deal Wednesday, only saying negotiators now needed to <em>\u201cdo some allocation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cWe\u2019ve made the first big, big, big, big step,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Shelby said.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <strong>Charles Schumer<\/strong> (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that the Senate could pass the measure as soon as Thursday, provided there aren\u2019t any \u201cunwelcome brouhaha\u201d \u2014 or actions by one senator that could hold up the bill in exchange for concessions or amendments.<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans largely voted against the one-week stopgap, and House Minority Leader <strong>Kevin McCarthy<\/strong> (R-Calif.) is signaling opposition to a broader spending deal, too. This comes in contrast to others in Republican leadership, such as Senate Minority Leader <strong>Mitch McConnell<\/strong> (R-Ky.), who has expressed support for an omnibus to be enacted sooner, citing concerns about funding for defense and national security.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe were basically negotiating with the House Democrats and the Democrats here because some of the House Republicans have not shown as much interest in getting an omnibus,\u201d<\/em> Shelby told reporters on Wednesday (The Hill and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/12\/14\/house-vote-stopgap-funding-00073879\">Politico<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy\u2019s opposition to the omnibus is fueling tensions between Senate and House GOP leaders. As The Hill\u2019s Alexander Bolton reports, McConnell\u2019s Senate allies say that McCarthy\u2019s criticisms are \u201cnot helpful\u201d to their efforts to pass the year-end spending package. One GOP senator, who spoke anonymously with The Hill, said McCarthy is making it tougher to wrap up the unfinished business of the 117th Congress and stirring up conservative critics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><em>\u201cI understand the politics of criticizing McConnell but they need to have a relationship,\u201d<\/em> the lawmaker said.<em> \u201cMcConnell\u2019s got pretty thick skin but I think there\u2019s a way for McCarthy to try to placate conservatives in the House without attacking McConnell.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>McCarthy is also facing scrutiny as he negotiates a fragile path to the Speakership next year despite opposition from a handful of conservatives within his own conference who are resisting all entreaties to alter course for the sake of party unity. The informal talks between party officials, former campaign workers, strategists, and activists are centering around three states \u2014 Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina \u2014 as possible alternatives to kick off the 2024 nominating contest, with proponents citing their ample diversity and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election importance as upsides.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere are still conversations happening behind the scenes about this,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Adam Green<\/strong>, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. <em>\u201cThe White House put a lot of people in a difficult situation because nobody wants to be fighting the White House on this thing. It\u2019s not that Democrats don\u2019t like Biden\u2019s choice, it\u2019s just that they see more viable options in states that check all the same boxes and offer even more potential benefits in their swing state calculations.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump Organization was held in criminal contempt in a secret trial last fall for failing to comply with several grand jury subpoenas and court orders related to a criminal tax fraud investigation, court documents unsealed on Tuesday show. Former<strong> President Trump\u2019s<\/strong> company was ordered to pay a $4,000 fine for \u201cwillfully disobeying\u201d four subpoenas and three court orders following the one-day contempt trial in October 2021 (The Hill and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/13\/nyregion\/trump-organization-contempt-secret-trial.html\">The New York Times<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Most unsuccessful Arizona statewide Republican nominees have formally contested their opponents\u2019 certified victories, pushing vast allegations in arguing votes should be set aside or adjusted, moves that would flip the outcomes. The Hill\u2019s Zach Schonfeld has a rundown of the election challengers.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/politics\/arizona\/2022\/12\/13\/next-steps-for-kari-lake-mark-finchem-election-challenges-scheduled\/69725356007\/\">The Arizona Republic<\/a>: What\u2019s next for <strong>Kari Lake<\/strong>, <strong>Mark Finchem<\/strong> election lawsuits.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In Georgia, Republican Secretary of State<strong> Brad Raffensperger<\/strong> is calling on legislators to end the state\u2019s runoff system for general elections, arguing that the process places too heavy a burden on voters and election officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGeorgia is one of the only states in [the] country with a General Election Runoff,\u201d<\/em> Raffensperger said in a Wednesday statement. <em>\u201cWe\u2019re also one of the only states that always seems to have a runoff. I\u2019m calling on the General Assembly to visit the topic of the General Election Runoff and consider reforms.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His comments come just over a week after Georgia held its second Senate runoff election in less than two years, which saw Sen. <strong>Raphael Warnock<\/strong> (D) defeat Republican <strong>Herschel Walker<\/strong>. State law currently requires a candidate to receive more than 50 percent of the vote in a general election to win outright, and if no one hits that threshold, the race heads to a runoff between the top two candidates (The Hill).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4<\/strong><strong> ADMINISTRATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden on Wednesday said the U.S. should have \u201csocietal guilt\u201d over taking too long to address gun violence and school shootings in a statement to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. \u2014 where 20 children and six adults were killed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe should have societal guilt for taking too long to deal with this problem,\u201d<\/em> Biden said in the statement. <em>\u201cWe have a moral obligation to pass and enforce laws that can prevent these things from happening again. We owe it to the courageous, young survivors and to the families who lost part of their soul 10 years ago to turn their pain into purpose.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Biden referenced the progress made on gun policy reform this year. The Federal Judicial Police announced the seizure on Wednesday, after a sprawling police probe into allegations of \u201ccriminal organization, corruption and money laundering\u201d rocked the European Parliament. The bank\u2019s baseline interest range increased by 0.5 percentage points to a span of 4.25 to 4.5 percent, the highest level in 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed\u2019s smaller increase marks a turning point in its battle with high inflation after it issued four straight rate hikes of 0.75 percentage points earlier in the year. As the coldest months approach, the low vaccination rates portend a difficult and potentially deadly winter.<\/p>\n<p>Long COVID has caused or contributed to at least 3,500 deaths in the United States, according to an analysis of death certificates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
