Do you remember the hype? 5G was supposed to be faster than many home internet connections and available basically everywhere. The reality is that 5G often seems to be worse than 4G LTE.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_5G_Was_Overhyped_and_Why_Your_5G_Is_Slow\"><\/span>How 5G Was Overhyped (and Why Your 5G Is Slow)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The industry promised speeds of up to 100 Mbps for 5G, and 5G was never going to live up to that hype in typical usage.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s why: There are multiple types of 5G, including mmWave, mid-band, low-band 5G. All the hype about crazy 5G speeds and low latency was about mmWave (millimeter wave) 5G. This type of 5G is superfast but has very short ranges. To take advantage of it, you need to be near a mmWave cell tower\u2014and the signal isn\u2019t great at <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing through walls.<\/p>\n<p>You might have good mmWave 5G coverage in a dense city. A sports stadium might have enough towers for good mmWave coverage. Maybe everyone in a dense urban center or at a football <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> now has a solid, speedy signal! That\u2019s great.<\/p>\n<p>But what about on the way home? In most places, you won\u2019t have that mmWave coverage, so there\u2019s no hope of hitting those theoretical mmWave speeds consistently.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like if a chain pizza restaurant promised a new delivery service that could deliver you a pizza in as fast as ten seconds. That sounds amazing! But the fine print would be that yes, if you\u2019re standing in front of one of their restaurants, they can get you a pizza in ten seconds. Otherwise, you\u2019ll have to wait 30-45 minutes for the delivery to arrive. That\u2019s a little less impressive, even if it\u2019s technically true that they can achieve crazy speeds in an ideal situation.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"But_Why_Does_5G_Seem_Worse_Than_4G_LTE\"><\/span>But Why Does 5G Seem\u00a0<em>Worse<\/em> Than 4G LTE?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Beyond mmWave, there\u2019s mid-band and low-band 5G. In theory, mid-band 5G should be faster and better than 4G LTE, even if it\u2019s nowhere near the promised speeds associated with mmWave.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t seem to work that well. We\u2019ve noticed a lot of cases where our phones switch from 5G to 4G LTE, as if they\u2019re struggling and failing to maintain that 5G connection. It\u2019s something we\u2019ve noticed all over the country.<\/p>\n<p>Marques Brownlee has shared the same experience, saying it\u2019s \u201cworse than 4G. It\u2019s slower, it\u2019s less consistent, and it\u2019s more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re actually just connected to a low-band 5G network, there\u2019s a good chance that it\u2019s slower than 4G LTE. Low-band 5G was meant to further extend cellular coverage to remote rural areas that may have been poorly covered by 4G LTE. That\u2019s better than nothing, but there\u2019s no surprise it\u2019s not better than 4G LTE.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"u2mUpkApObk\" params=\"start=608\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/u2mUpkApObk\/hqdefault.jpg');\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Smartphone_5G_Icons_Are_Confusing\"><\/span>Smartphone 5G Icons Are Confusing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On top of all of that, 5G doesn\u2019t really mean 5G when you see it on your phone\u2019s status bar. AT&amp;T\u2019s 5G isn\u2019t real 5G\u2014it\u2019s 4G LTE with some improvements. If you see \u201c5G UC,\u201d that stands for \u201c5G Ultra Capacity\u201d and is T-Mobile\u2019s name for mid-band 5G: Something much closer to 4G LTE than mmWave 5G. If you\u2019re using AT&amp;T and you see \u201c5G+\u201d, however, that means you have a mmWave signal, so that\u2019s good. There\u2019s a lot of talk about C-band 5G, but that\u2019s another type of mid-band 5G.<\/p>\n<p>All those logos muddy the waters, since you may not even be connected to 5G when your phone says \u201c5G.\u201d Even if you are, a lot of the 5G status symbols you see don\u2019t indicate you\u2019re connected to the speedy 5G that the tech industry hyped. This is true whether you\u2019re using Android or iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>And, even if you are connected to that speedy mmWave 5G network, you might see a dropoff in speeds as you move further from the tower or go behind a building. Then your phone might decide to try switching to 4G, which could result in connection hiccups as well as a hit to battery life as your phone is continually switching towers.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hopefully_5G_Will_Improve\"><\/span>Hopefully, 5G Will Improve<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So where does that leave us? 4G will be around for years to come\u2014plans to sunset 4G networks aren\u2019t expected to start until <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.digi.com%2Fblog%2Fpost%2F4g-to-5g-how-long-will-4g-lte-be-available&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">2030<\/a>. Still, new investments are going into 5G instead. We\u2019re paying for 5G hardware in our new phones, our cell phone plans now include 5G service, and cellular carriers are putting money into upgrading infrastructure for 5G.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, it\u2019ll get better. Hopefully, a combination of infrastructure upgrades, chipset improvements, and advancements to 5G itself will result in a signal that\u2019s somewhat better than 4G LTE over most of the country. It seems likely that the industry will figure it out\u2014eventually.<\/p>\n<p>Still, this feels pretty bad. 5G was going to be a big upgrade, but it feels like we\u2019re struggling to get it competitive with 4G LTE.
