Storied franchises turn over their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/05\/26\/1101658895\/yankees-rays-twitter-raise-awareness-gun-violence-uvalde\">social-media feeds to activists<\/a> so they can demand federal legislation, as the Yankees and Rays did earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>For the last two years, the National Football League has allowed its players to choose from one of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/05\/sports\/nfl-social-justice.html\">six pre-selected messages<\/a> to wear on their helmets. Those messages are: \u201cEnd Racism,\u201d \u201cStop Hate,\u201d \u201cIt Takes All of Us,\u201d \u201cBlack Lives Matter,\u201d \u201cInspire Change\u201d and \u201cSay Their Stories.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Recently, in response to a mass shooting in Buffalo, NY, it added <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/2022\/09\/08\/all-rams-will-wear-choose-love-helmet-decals-vs-bills\/50714683\/\">a seventh<\/a>: \u201cChoose Love.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>One does not have to disagree with any of these messages to grasp the many problems with this scheme. The NFL contends that the mottos it has chosen are related to important \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> justice\u201d causes. And, indeed, they are. But they are not the only social justice causes in America. They\u2019re the ones in which the NFL \u2014 and our elites \u2014 h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en currently to be interested. Under the rules that the NFL has set, players may opt out completely, but they are unable to wear messages protesting for or against abortion, or complaining about prison conditions at Riker\u2019s, or raising awareness about sex trafficking at the border, or highlighting anything else they consider a big deal. <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, on balance, you think those other issues are less important than the NFL\u2019s choices. But that\u2019s not the point. As has become customary before big games in the English Premier League, the England international team <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K-BhHnzdsj0\">made a big show of kneeling down<\/a> before their opening World Cup game against Iran, to send a message \u201cthat inclusivity is very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/german-one-love.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"The One Love armband worn during a September soccer match between Germany and Hungary. But, when the teams from seven participating nations tried to wear an armband protesting the anti-gay policies of host-country Qatar, FIFA informed them that its rule against \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asser.nl\/SportsLaw\/Blog\/?tag=\/FIFA\">political, religious or personal messages or slogans<\/a>\u201d would be strictly enforced, and offered the teams the chance to wear an alternative armband that said, \u201cNo Discrimination\u201d \u2014 which, for reasons that can presumably not be explained, does not fall under the rubric of \u201cpolitical, religious or personal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a personal matter, I dislike the mixing of sports and current affairs, but, as a free speech guy, I accept there is nothing intrinsically wrong with an athlete opining on politics. The expectation, however, that players will protest \u2014 and protest only in a way that is deemed acceptable \u2014\u00a0has become downright weird and even cynical.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian soccer team\u2019s refusal to sing their national anthem during the group stages of the World Cup was powerful precisely because the players who staged it were not supposed to do so \u2014 and because their conduct could have led to lethal repercussions. And there\u2019ll still be plenty to go around if we stop forcing our athletes to be activists.<\/p>\n<p><em>Charles C. W.
