again. And they\u2019ll offer important reads on demand as inflation-chastened consumers navigate holiday shopping.  <\/p>\n<p> Quarterly results from FedEx<br \/>\n        FDX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203047719\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.84%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      and Nike<br \/>\n        NKE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203439053\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.36%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      in the week ahead, along with a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Mills Inc.<br \/>\n        GIS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206659526\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.02%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       will provide a taste of what\u2019s to come when the bigger earnings storm hits next month. For sure, rising prices for core necessities mix with a barrage of holiday discounts. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Analysts have been slightly less downcast on the fourth quarter than they were about the third, even as the Federal Reserve\u2019s inflation-busting tactics raise concerns about the economy and U.S. retail sales marked their biggest decrease in nearly a year in November amid sluggish car sales and slower spending elsewhere<\/p>\n<p>FactSet senior earnings analyst John Butters, in a report on Friday, said that analysts and companies \u201chave been slightly less pessimistic in their earnings outlooks for S&amp;P 500 companies for the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter,\u201d even if they\u2019re more cautious when compared to trends over the last five years. <\/p>\n<p>Analysts have lowered their earnings-per-share estimates by 6.1% since Sept. 30. That\u2019s a bit narrower than the 6.8% haircut for the third quarter. <\/p>\n<p>But with 2022 largely in the bag, analysts\u2019 buy, hold and sell ratings haven\u2019t always panned out as planned. <\/p>\n<p>The energy sector, Butters said, had the largest percentage of buy ratings at the end of 2021, and also logged the biggest price gain of all the sectors tracked by FactSet. But the two sectors that had next largest percentages of buy ratings at the end of 2021 \u2014 information <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, which includes Microsoft Corp.<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.73%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le Inc.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.46%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      ; and communication services, which includes Google parent Alphabet Inc.<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/lastsale\" class=\"negative\">-0.66%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       \u2014 \u201chave seen the largest price decline and fourth-largest price decline of all eleven sectors during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is interesting to note that the same three sectors that had the highest percentages of Buy ratings at the end of last year also have the highest percentages of Buy ratings at the end of this year,\u201d Butters said in the report. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the other hand,\u201d he continued, \u201cthe two sectors with smallest percentages of Buy ratings (Consumer Staples and Utilities) at the end of last year have been the second-best and fourth-best performers in terms of price returns of all eleven sectors during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_week_in_earnings\"><\/span>This week in earnings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Nine S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-1.11%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       components and one member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.85%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       are set to report quarterly results in the week ahead, according to FactSet. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>General Mills<br \/>\n        GIS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206659526\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.02%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       \u2014 which makes food under brands like Betty Crocker, Bisquick and pet-food producer Blue Buffalo \u2014 reports quarterly earnings on Tuesday, as do FedEx<br \/>\n        FDX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203047719\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.84%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Nike<br \/>\n        NKE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203439053\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.36%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n       Cybersecurity and connected-device company BlackBerry Ltd.<br \/>\n        BB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202784246\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.94%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       also reports on Tuesday.  <\/p>\n<p>Cruise-line operator Carnival Corp.<br \/>\n        CCL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202325446\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.09%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      will report Wednesday, with analyst reservations about the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> rebound\u00a0starting to surface. It said then it planned up to $2.7 billion in cost cuts but higher shipping rates. The company\u2019s ground-shipping business reportedly planned to cut its holiday volume outlook. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe earnings declined (year over year) and sequentially as volumes continue to decline, even as we are in peak season,\u201d Cowen analyst Helane Becker said in a research note on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Nike shares in September tanked similarly, after executives said markdowns on its own products would hit margins. They said they expected their rivals to keep cutting prices on clothing through at least the end of the year. <\/p>\n<p><strong>For more: Inventory concerns are pounding Nike\u2019s stock<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The consumer shift away from buying clothes left Nike and other retailers trying to find ways to slim down excess goods in warehouses and backrooms that piled up after supply-chain snags, overordering and misreading demand. However, Nike\u2019s management has said that the swell in inventory levels likely peaked in North America in the three-month period that ended on Aug. 31. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market is focused on progress to resolution of FY23 inventory issues as a set up to a strong margin recovery in\u201d fiscal 2024, Stifel analysts said in a note on Wednesday. However, they said they expected there would be \u201cmore work to be done\u201d in the second half of Nike\u2019s fiscal year, which ends in May.<\/p>\n<p>General Mills will report as higher food prices \u2014 a function of their own rising costs and consumer demand \u2014 carry many producers to bigger profits. The company this month got hit with a downgrade from Deutsche Bank, citing potential weakness in demand for memory chips. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are incrementally more cautious on the memory market, as we believe the current downturn will last longer and be more severe than we previously forecasted,\u201d Deutsche Bank analyst Sidney Ho said of Micron in a note to clients. \u201cOn the demand side, weakness in consumer PC\/smartphone has now spread to the enterprise side, and even cloud demand is starting to weaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Micron last month cut its supply outlook, saying it was \u201ctaking bold and aggressive steps to reduce bit supply growth to limit the size of our inventory\u201d as demand contracts.
