While a handful of local <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> outlets reported on the story at the time, the case received far less attention than most in which a cop shoots a civilian. <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this has something to do with Bogard\u2019s race \u2014 she is black and the shooting victim, Ariel Roman, is white. Whenever a white cop shoots and injures a black victim in the US, the media explodes with outrage, as journalists seek to prop up the narrative of systemic white supremacy and brutality within the police force. But there is far less <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>etite for the reverse scenario, even when that white victim isn\u2019t armed, doesn\u2019t appear to be a danger to police and is shot at close range.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The details around the Roman shooting are clear. One of the officers screams \u201cstop resisting\u201d more than 10 times. Eventually the officers deploy their Tasers, yet Roman manages to remain on his feet. Bogard then pulls her gun and yells, \u201cSir, put your f\u2013king hands down!\u201d Butler, meanwhile, yells, \u201cShoot him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a matter of seconds, Bogard shoots Roman in the stomach at point-blank range. Somehow Roman flees before she fires at him a second time in the back. Roman was clearly noncompliant \u2014 he defied all of the officers\u2019 commands, forcing events to escalate. On the other hand, firing shots at Roman when he was just a few feet away feels excessive. Although Bogard claimed she shot Roman in self-defense, even her own police chief, David Brown, didn\u2019t buy that argument. He <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/officers-melvina-bogard-bernard-butler\/\">called<\/a> for her to be fired for violating police protocol, saying deadly force was not necessary on a person who posed no serious threat to her or anyone nearby.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s most noticeable in this case is the media\u2019s response to the shooting \u2014 or, rather, its lack thereof. The case was almost completely ignored. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/jacob-blake.jpg?w=682\" alt=\"After black victim Jacob Blake of Kenosha, Wis., was shot by a white cop in 2021, the case was covered heavily in the mainstream media. The notion that white police officers are brutal murderers of black victims (which most definitely was the case with Derek Chauvin\u2019s murder of George Floyd in May 2020) often fails to hold up in court.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, policy analyst Zach Goldberg researched racial bias in the media and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/news\/articles\/media-great-racial-awakening\">showed<\/a> that unarmed black victims of fatal police shootings generate nine times as many <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> search items as those about white victims. Mainstream media outlets have made coordinated \u201ceditorial decisions\u201d to \u201cnormalize among their readership the belief that \u2018color\u2019 is the defining attribute of other human beings,\u201d Goldberg <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/news\/articles\/media-great-racial-awakening\">writes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/makhia-bryant.jpg?w=682\" alt=\"Ohio teen Ma'Khia Bryant was shot and killed by Columbus Police Officer Nicholas Reardon in a case that immediately went viral. White victims have also been killed by cops in circumstances that mirror their black counterparts: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/public-safety\/sd-me-sdpdshooting-20180831-story.html\">grabbing<\/a> their driver\u2019s license during a traffic stop (mistaken for a gun), <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/akron\/2015\/09\/man_killed_in_officer-involved.html\">not showing<\/a> their hands upon request, and being pushed to the ground and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_c-E_i8Q5G0&amp;&amp;feature=youtu.be\">suffocated<\/a> to death while officers crack jokes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But these aren\u2019t the stories that excite the media. <\/p>\n<p>As the Ariel Roman shooting reveals, the importance of human suffering hinges on the race of the victim \u2014 and its ability to be exploited for maximum ideological impact.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rav\u00a0Arora specializes in topics of race, civil liberties, and spirituality.
