The party just did pretty well thanks to \u201cindependents\u00a0and Republican leaning or supporting\u00a0crossover voters \u2014 not base voters mobilized by progressivism\u201d \u2014 because Dems \u201cin key races were perceived as being more moderate\u201d than their GOP opponents. Moving left in recent years has cost the party support among nonwhite and even young voters, and nonwhite <em>turnout<\/em> fell in 2022, too. Why? \u201cBlacks, Hispanics, and Asian Americans prioritized the cost of living and crime,\u201d not hot-button progressive issues, and \u201ccommon sense suggests you should pay attention to the issues voters are most concerned about.\u201d Time and again, \u201cModeration = Democratic votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Schools_watch_%E2%80%98Silent_Majority_Want_Choice\"><\/span>Schools watch: \u2018Silent Majority\u2019 Want Choice<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cEducational choice emerged this year as one common-ground issue where the election results are catching up to the polling,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/congress-blog\/3775493-the-silent-majority-of-americans-want-school-choice\/\">notes Colyn Ritter at The Hill<\/a>: \u201cSchool choice has support from a silent majority of Americans.\u201d And it \u201chas\u00a0<em>bipartisan<\/em>\u00a0support.\u201d \u201cDemocrats support school choice programs like vouchers and tax credit scholarships at\u201d 50% and 64%, respectively,\u201d while 49% of \u201cRepublicans support vouchers\u201d and 59% \u201csupport tax credit scholarships.\u201d \u201cAffluent families\u201d have \u201calways had options when the district-assigned schools fall short.\u201d It shouldn\u2019t be \u201cout of bounds for parents of all incomes to expect better.\u201d In fact, \u201cproviding a more equitable education landscape\u201d is not \u201cjust a winning political platform, it is the common ground that we desperately need as Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Culture_critic_Arts_Turbulent_Year\"><\/span>Culture critic: Art\u2019s Turbulent Year<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/art\/artists\/best-worst-art-exhibitions-2022-year-art-world-lost-fight-iconoclasts\/\">The Telegraph\u2019s Alastair Sooke predicts<\/a> the art world\u2019s 2022 will be remembered most \u201cfor climate activists broadening their protests from motorways to museums.\u201d The \u201ctrouble with iconoclasm\u201d is \u201cthat it\u2019s catching, like the plague.\u201d Thus, \u201cas if following an atrocious recipe from The Activist Cookbook,\u201d vandals \u201churled tomato soup over Vincent van Gogh\u2019s Sunflowers,\u201d \u201clobbed mashed potato at a view of haystacks by Claude Monet\u201d and \u201csmeared a cream cake across the glass that protects the Mona Lisa.\u201d A \u201cremarkable aspect of this vexing phenomenon has been the humming-and-hawing of museums around the world in response,\u201d with the International Council of Museums even calling museums \u201callies\u201d of the hoodlums \u201cin facing the common threat of climate change.\u201d The \u201cmost lasting effect\u201d may \u201cbe the destruction of old certainties about what museums and galleries are even for.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Foreign_desk_Erdogans_Biggest_Fear\"><\/span>Foreign desk: Erdo\u011fan\u2019s Biggest Fear?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTurkey will hold national elections this coming summer, and annual inflation reached a 24-year high of 85.5% this fall. President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan must be worried,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/recep-tayyip-erdogan-runs-scared-in-turkey-ekrem-imamoglu-court-conviction-11671145733\">muse The Wall Street Journal\u2019s editors<\/a>. Last week, \u201ca court convicted Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamo\u011flu on a trumped-up speech offense.\u201d The \u201cruling disqualifies\u201d the \u201cprominent opposition figure\u201d from \u201cholding or running for political office.\u201d The mayor decried that \u201cthe judiciary has been transformed into an instrument to punish the dissidents.\u201d But it may backfire on Erdo\u011fan: When Imamo\u011flu beat the prez\u2019s favored candidate in the 2019 mayoral race, a new election was called \u2014 and \u201cin a rebuke to the ruling party,\u201d voters \u201cgave him a landslide victory\u201d in the \u201cdo-over.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neocon_Facing_Facts_on_Long_COVID\"><\/span>Neocon: Facing Facts on Long COVID<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cLong covid patients and researchers alike are coming for your taxpayer dollars,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commentary.org\/noah-rothman\/a-highly-discriminating-disease\/\">concludes Commentary\u2019s Noah Rothman<\/a>\u00a0of a Politico piece raising alarms on the syndrome. Some facts: 78.5% of \u201cdeaths attributed to long Covid were among white Americans,\u201d though \u201caffluent\u201d may be more apt. In fact, it\u2019s plain that many long COVID sufferers \u201cnever had Covid-19 to begin with.\u201d One \u201cof the few features that reliably indicate an individual\u2019s increased risk of suffering from the residual effects of a Covid infection was \u2018preexisting psychological distress\u2019\u201d a JAMA study found.
