Unspeakable horrors descend on the Philharmonic! Ten words I never thought I\u2019d write. But <em>Plan 9 From Outer Space<\/em>\u00a0is being turned into an opera.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The legendary, and legendarily bad, cult film from 1957 \u2014 which Tim Burton paid tribute to in his Oscar-winning 1994 feature\u00a0<em>Ed Wood<\/em>\u00a0starring Johnny Depp as the\u00a0<em>Plan 9<\/em>\u00a0director \u2014 will get the classical music treatment courtesy of Thai composer, and B-movie fanatic, Somtow Sucharitkul.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Plan 9 From Outer Space: A Really Grand Opera by Somtow Sucharitkul<\/em> is currently in the libretto stage. Rehearsals will begin in earnest next year. Sucharitkul plans to release a teaser \u201csuite from the opera\u201d next fall and to premiere the full opera in 2024. Torsten Neumann, director the Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany\u2019s leading indie film fest, is producing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201c<em>Plan 9<\/em>\u00a0is, of course, celebrated as the worst picture ever made and a cultural icon,\u201d Somtow said. \u201cMovie buffs have all the lines memorized. I intend to compose the score in the spirit of Ed Wood \u2014 with utter seriousness and high moral intent, as befits the exalted subject matter about aliens saving humanity from itself \u2014 so timely in these, ah, times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cOf course, we\u2019re not intending to produce the \u2018worst opera\u2019 in history,\u201d says Neumann, \u201cquite the opposite. The true spirit of\u00a0<em>Plan 9<\/em>\u00a0comes from the utter sincerity of Ed Wood\u2019s vision and the fact that no amount of ineptitude, or lack of money, or mishaps like the star dropping dead before shooting began [which h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened to planned\u00a0<em>Plan 9<\/em>\u00a0star Bela Lugosi] could dampen his optimism and faith. In a way it\u2019s a metaphor for all filmmakers and their many-sided visions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Sucharitkul has proper classical credentials. One of Thailand\u2019s foremost composers, his work includes <em>Requiem: In Memoriam 9\/11<\/em> \u2014 commissioned by the government of Thailand as a gift for the victims of the 9\/11 \u2014 and original operas, including <em>Helena Citr\u00f3nov\u00e1<\/em>, about a Holocaust survivor composed for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, which is currently playing in repertory at the Theater Hof in Germany, and <em>The Silent Prince<\/em>, a \u201cBollywood opera\u201d on the past lives of the Buddha, the first in a planned <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of ten operas, which first opened in Houston and subsequently played in Bangkok, Brno, and Bayreuth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    You can check out the trailer for Sucharitkul\u2019s <em>Helena Citr\u00f3nov\u00e1<\/em> below.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HELENA CITR\u00d3NOV\u00c1 - Theater Hof 2022\/23\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NiWB5eiS2Zg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But Sucharitkul has a dirty secret: he loves bad movies. He spent the 1980s and \u201890s in Hollywood, where he reinvented himself as a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> fiction novelist and occasional screenwriter for B-movie legends Roger Corman and Brian Yuzna. He even directed one: the 1989 straight-to-video horror title\u00a0<em>The Laughing Dead<\/em>, recently re-released in a 4K restoration Blu-Ray by Vinegar Syndrome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cFunny how [my film] has gone from universally panned to a cult classic in a mere four decades,\u201d Sucharitkul quips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Last year, Sucharitkul wrote and starred in\u00a0<em>The Maestro: A Symphony of Terror<\/em>, a Thai horror tribute in which a frustrated classical music conductor (Sucharitkul) goes insane and starts massacring his students. \u201cIt\u2019s basically\u00a0<em>Mr. Holland\u2019s Opus<\/em>meets\u00a0<em>The Texas Chainsaw Massacre<\/em>,\u201d says Sucharitkul. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The film had its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany\u2019s answer to Sundance, in 2021. The Siam Sinfonietta is the orchestra performing in the film\u2019s final scene. Sucharitkul was a musical consultant on the movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI have composed epic operas, written trilogies (often accidentally spilling into more than three volumes) and a novel that made the Horror Writer\u2019s Association\u2019s \u201cAll-time top forty\u201d list [1974\u2019s <em>Vampire Junction<\/em>]\u2026 but I honestly say that an operatic adaptation of <em>Plan 9<\/em> will be the summation of my life\u2019s work,\u201d says Sucharitkul. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Plan 9<\/em> won\u2019t be the first film to get the opera treatment. Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore adapted his score to David Cronenberg\u2019s 1986 film\u00a0<em>The Fly<\/em>\u00a0into a two-act opera, with a libretto by David Henry Hwang, in 2008. It premiered at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Ch\u00e2telet in Paris.
