<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       The European Union has accused Meta Platforms, Inc. of breaching antitrust rules by allegedly distorting competition in the markets for online classified ads.<\/p>\n<p> In preliminary findings<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_7728\" class=\"icon none\"> published on Monday<\/a>, the bloc\u2019s Commission said it \u201ctakes issue with Meta<br \/>\n        META,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.12%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       tying its online classified ads service, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> Marketplace, to its personal social network, Facebook. Shares of Meta fell 1.8% in premarket trading. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cThe Commission is also concerned that Meta is imposing unfair trading conditions\u201d on Facebook Marketplace\u2019s competitors for its own benefit,\u201d according to the statement. The EU said it believed that Meta \u201cabused its dominant position in two ways.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Meta rejected the claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe claims made by the European Commission are without foundation. We will continue to work with regulatory authorities to demonstrate that our product innovation is pro-consumer and pro-competitive,\u201d Tim Lamb, the company\u2019s head of EMEA Competition, said in a statement. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Commission said it has two main concerns with Meta.  Firstly, by tying Facebook Marketplace with its dominant personal social network Facebook, users of the social media site \u201cautomatically have access to Facebook Marketplace, whether they want it or not.\u201d Competitors of Facebook\u2019s Marketplace could not match its substantial distribution advantage, it added. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond, Meta unilaterally imposes unfair trading conditions on competing online classified ads services which advertise on Facebook or Instagram,\u201d the EU said. <\/p>\n<p>The Commission voiced concern that the terms and conditions Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lies authorizing it to use ads-related data derived from competitors for the benefit of Facebook Marketplace, \u201care unjustified, disproportionate and not necessary for the provision of online display advertising services on Meta\u2019s platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such conditions, said the EU, impose a burden on competitors and only benefit Facebook Marketplace. <\/p>\n<p>Meta is apparently studying the EU\u2019s statement and plans to comment further, but is also cooperating fully with the investigation, said a source close to the company. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Targeting the EU\u2019s main concern, Meta believes the MarketPlace ecosystem offers more choice and a better interface for buying and selling of goods, as opposed to bigger established incumbents and has already been thriving, with Amazon<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.64%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       eBay<br \/>\n        EBAY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204653455\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.30%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Vinted among those active in the Europe space, the source said. <\/p>\n<p>The company also rejects the claim that it uses advertiser data from competitors to compete against them and that users and can choose whether or not they use Marketplace, said the source. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith its Facebook social network, Meta reaches globally billions of monthly users and millions of active advertisers,\u201d said Margrethe Vestager, executive vice president in charge of competition policy, in the same statement. <\/p>\n<p>Tying Marketplace to Facebook drives users towards using that online classified ad service, she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, we are concerned that Meta imposed unfair trading conditions, allowing it to use of data on competing online classified ad services.
