The keepers of the property aren\u2019t a grizzled king or a giant dragon, but owners Harmen and Dawn van Hoogevest, a musician-slash\u2013clinical counsellor and an artist who purchased the 22-acre plot in 1971 for $7,000. Now 82 and 74 respectively, the couple are looking to downsize: they\u2019ve <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.ca\/real-estate\/23592277\/1450-stewart-creek-road-christina-lake?fbclid=IwAR1uysunXxrTXbgw-jLZOknufGCnxtIM_ocuHBEPpUWDvUmpuA2dRqIXN1U\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listed their enchanted castle for $1.65 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ready to pass along their custom-built kingdom to another equally imaginative owner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The van Hoogevests first lived in Vancouver in the 1960s, inhabiting a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of unconventional living quarters\u2014from a leaky old fisheries-inspection boat to a school bus to a plywood box located in an<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orchard. Dawn, who was working as a waitress at the time, came up with the idea of pooling their pennies and buying a property where the couple could, as she put it, \u201creally be free.\u201d The duo dreamed of a home where they could grow their own food and nurture their creative spirits. They first laid eyes on their future castle grounds, located in Christina Lake, B.C., through an ad in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vancouver Sun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They paid the site a visit in wintertime, tromping through five feet of snow, before putting in an offer. Im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely, Dawn and Harmen looked at one another and said, \u201cWe\u2019re home.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1242663 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_20221130_0014-e1671466913382.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"876\" height=\"764\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, the property\u2019s only standing structure was a rickety log cabin with no windows\u2014which, until then, had served as an illicit party spot for local teens. Unfazed by the squalor, Dawn and Harmen quickly covered the open windows with building plastic so they could move in. Without running water, they boiled water from a nearby creek to bathe in. For eight years, they lived on the property with no electricity, walking down the mountain every week to do laundry and buy groceries. They took work at the local sawmill to fund the construction of their dream home.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242664 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_20221130_0005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2388\" height=\"1732\"\/>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242678 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"852\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The home slowly took shape\u2014in the form of a castle. They didn\u2019t plan it out. \u201cIt just came out of us,\u201d says Dawn. Carl Jung, whose theory of the collective unconscious Harmen cites as an explanation for their impulse, was an influence. The legendary psychiatrist once built his own castle-shaped home in Bollingen, Switzerland.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>READ:\u00a0This $3.8-million Ontario home was made from five reclaimed barns<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Harmen was growing up in Holland, he worked alongside his father, a master builder, who taught him his plastering techniques. To build the castle, the couple hand-mixed concrete in a wheelbarrow, layering it over wire mesh, insulation and paper barriers to create walls that are 18 inches thick in some places. The ultimate goal was longevity. \u201cIt can\u2019t burn, it can\u2019t rot and it can\u2019t be eaten by insects,\u201d says Harmen. \u201cThis is a house you could pass on to your great-great-great-grandchildren.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242661 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_36.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><\/span><b><br \/><\/b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242660 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_38.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242662 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_41.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/>The house\u2019s fluid, undulating shape was inspired by the architecture of Antoni Gaud\u00ed, as well as traditional building structures, like igloos.\u00a0\u201cMy dad doesn\u2019t believe that people were meant to live in boxes,\u201d says the couple\u2019s son, Eric van Hoogevest.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242665 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_34.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242666 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_35.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main portion of the three-bedroom house is a gothic arch, which encompasses the kitchen and living room. The result is a warm living space that might just be the ultimate cottagecore fantasy come to life. In some places, the ceilings are 22 feet high to create a feeling of spaciousness; in the kitchen, they top out at eight feet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1242667 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/IMG_20221130_0006-e1671467002659.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1184\" height=\"1399\"\/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242668 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_43.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242669 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_54.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The couple started building the house\u2019s turret in the late 1970s. It contains three bedrooms, each with their own ensuite. A hand-built spiral staircase stretches from the main floor all the way up to the lookout. \u201cIf there\u2019s a forest fire, you could surely see it from there,\u201d says Dawn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242670 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_63.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242671 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_62.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire house is heated by a wood-burning fireplace, but the couple recently installed a heat pump to provide extra heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. A 30,000-gallon underground cistern pipes water into the house from a nearby creek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242675 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242672 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1242673 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2460754_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"852\"\/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjacent to the main building is a \u201cmeditation pod\u201d; a small dome built from concrete; a pool filled with lily pads (and a colony of turtles); and a studio where Dawn makes stained glass and sculptures, as well as a 1,450-square-foot workshop where Harmen practises cello and builds furniture. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also a greenhouse, fruit trees and plenty of garden space to grow vegetables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>MORE: How a B.C. couple turned a shipping container into their dream home<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The van Hoogevests feel bittersweet about selling the castle, but neither have any regrets about the ending\u2014a h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y one. \u201cThis has been a wonderful life and I would do it all over again if I had to,\u201d Harmen says.
