Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en,\u201d said Michaels, 78, who practically has seen it all, including having the call on Mark Sanchez\u2019s buttfumble a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Michaels has been a central part of Amazon making history as the first exclusive streamer of NFL games. <\/p>\n<p><em>(Note: You\u2019ll be able to watch the Jets on Fox 5 in the New York area, if you don\u2019t have a Prime membership.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Arguably the greatest NFL TV play-by-player in history, Michaels hasn\u2019t been used to a \u201cB\u201d schedule as he spent nearly his entire career standing next to Howard Cosell, John Madden and Cris Collinsworth on Sundays and Mondays.<\/p>\n<p>At times during the season, Michaels has become a focus of the games as he hasn\u2019t been shy about, to borrow a phrase from Cosell, \u201cTelling it like it is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had to do with that particular game, as opposed to saying the schedule stinks,\u201d Michaels said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That particular game was Colts-Broncos in Week 5, when Michaels at times sounded a little more like Waldorf or Statler than a play-by-player.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/al-michaels-amazing-prime-year-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"NBC commentator Al Michaels on the field during an NFL game\" class=\"wp-image-25085314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/al-michaels-amazing-prime-year-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/al-michaels-amazing-prime-year-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/al-michaels-amazing-prime-year-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Al Michaels has delivered admirably in his first season with Amazon, even if he has been a bit curmudgeonly.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so funny because one of the things that was said that night that got played back to me was that I said, \u2018This was the kind of game that would be a fifth regional on CBS,\u2019\u201d Michaels said. \u201cWhat I actually said was a rookie offensive tackle for Indianapolis, who had like four penalties and gave up a couple of sacks was, \u2018[Bernhard] Raimann, this is the kind of game, if you\u2019re this guy, you want to have it on the No. 5 regional on CBS.\u2019 There is a distinction there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is a fair point on this instance. Still, at times, Michaels has sounded a bit curmudgeonly during games this season.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>It was not Michaels\u2019 choice to leave NBC after he called his record-tying 11th Super Bowl last February. The network chose to replace him on \u201cSunday Night Football\u201d with Mike Tirico, who had been eagerly waiting in the on-deck circle for years. Though Michaels has an \u201cemeritus\u201d role with NBC and will call a playoff game for them next month, it did stick out that when he did the weekly promo for the Sunday and Monday games, he went weeks without saying \u201cNBC\u201d as he highlighted \u201cSunday Night Football.\u201d It was even noticed inside the halls of NBC, according to sources. Was it on purpose?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot really, no,\u201d Michaels said. \u201cSunday night. No. No. I didn\u2019t even think about that. When you say \u2018Sunday night,\u2019 they know. I probably don\u2019t [say ESPN] when I say, \u2018Monday night.\u2019 They know where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The implication was there was some bad blood with NBC about how Tirico replaced him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, no,\u201d Michaels said. \u201cSomebody is trying to make stuff up about that. That has nothing do with it. So I\u2019m ready for action. There\u2019s no question about that. I mean, the thought of stepping away, why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the season began, Michaels\u2019 partner, Kirk Herbstreit, said he thought the duo could be the best pairing in sports. They have not reached that status yet, though to have a stable team in an outlet\u2019s rookie year is an accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it\u2019s blended great,\u201d Michaels said, \u201cI think the thing with Kirk is that some people said to me early on, \u2018He\u2019s a college guy. What does he know about the NFL?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"200\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/playlist.megaphone.fm\/?e=NYPH5196443491&amp;light=true\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Michaels said that with the constant turnover in the NFL, Herbstreit has an advantage because of his ESPN college football work. But what Michaels likes most is how the broadcast looks and feels with longtime producer Fred Gaudelli and the crew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing I\u2019m proudest of is that it looks like a big-time telecast,\u201d Michaels said. \u201cI think some people thought, \u2018What is this going to be? And Amazon is coming in and they have no infrastructure and is it going to be rinky-dink?\u2019 It\u2019s been anything but.
