Yet the summer release speared more than $140 million globally, including $90 million domestically. That\u2019s a small fortune for a literary adaptation that was made for $30 million \u2014 and a big win for Tom Rothman, Sony\u2019s movie studio chairman and theatrical evangelist. <em>The Woman King<\/em> likewise defied the odds in earning $92.3 million worldwide after staging its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Most other high-profile titles coming out of the fall fest circuit have struggled badly at the box office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    As 2022 wraps, Rothman, 68, has plenty to celebrate seven years after being asked by Sony chair Tony Vinciquerra to rebuild the studio following its devastating hack. Sony\u2019s Motion Picture Group has swung to three years of record profits. The past fiscal year hit an all-time high, led by <em>Spider-Man: No Way Home<\/em>, which grossed $1.92 billion globally since its release in mid-December 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Rothman and his team remain focused on building a varied menu of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>, versus only relying on a diet of branded IP (although he\u2019s made headway in that space, too). \u201cI genuinely believe if we don\u2019t keep taking chances on the <em>Crawdads<\/em> of the world or <em>The Woman King<\/em>, that is the threat to theatrical,\u201d says Rothman, who extended his contract in mid-June 2021 and added CEO to his title. \u201cCOVID was terrible. But at some point, the audience will move beyond it. I don\u2019t believe that streaming is a death threat to movies. Lack of originality could be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Meanwhile, as the profitability of streaming comes under scrutiny, the fact that Rothman doesn\u2019t have to feed a sister Sony service is looking like an advantage \u2014 as is his penchant for frugality. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI consider him to be the most valuable studio chief currently working, as well as in the last quarter-plus century. Tom consistently makes pictures for a lower negative cost than his peers,\u201d says Joe Singer, a financier who brokers deals between the studios and private equity. \u201cWhen Tony chose Tom, it was considered risky, but it turned around a flailing studio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cTheatrical is Tom\u2019s religion. He\u2019s zealous on this topic,\u201d says Nicole Brown, who heads up Sony\u2019s TriStar label, home of <em>The Woman King <\/em>and the upcoming biopic<em> Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody<\/em>, which opens in theaters nationwide on Dec. 23. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Rothman and Vinciquerra held out when streamers came calling during the pandemic. \u201cWe were offered a king\u2019s ransom for a number of our big movies, which we declined,\u201d Rothman says. \u201cInstead, we kept the faith.\u201d Sony did sell off several other titles to streamers during the heart of the pandemic, including the animated <em>The Mitchells vs. the Machines<\/em>, which was acquired by Netflix.<em> <\/em>And Rothman struck a deal for Netflix to finance Roald Dahl\u2019s <em>Matilda the Musical<\/em>, but retained theatrical rights in the U.K. and Ireland, where <em>Matilda<\/em> is a beloved property and grossed more than $5 million during an exclusive run at the Thanksgiving box office. The movie<em> <\/em>debuts everywhere else on Netflix over Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Rothman doesn\u2019t suffer fools \u2014 and can have a hard time hiding his frustration \u2014 but he inspires lasting loyalty among filmmakers and execs. \u201cHe fosters a very entrepreneurial environment. If you want the ball, he\u2019ll give it to you, but you\u2019d better do something with it,\u201d says Emma Watts, who worked under Rothman at 20th Century Fox before rising to vice chairman of the studio after he departed. \u201cAnd people forget that Tom started Fox Searchlight [in 1994], so he comes from a grassroots style of filmmaking, where a nose for material and talent is everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Another Rothman loyalist is Elizabeth Gabler, who for years ran Fox 2000 at 20th Century. After the literary film division was shuttered following the Disney-Fox merger, she had her pick in terms of where to land. She opted to follow Rothman to Sony and launch 3000 Pictures, home of <em>Crawdads<\/em> as well as the recently announced Bruce Lee biopic from Ang Lee. \u201cTom is a brilliant strategist. I find that to be very rare,\u201d says Gabler. \u201cHe\u2019s very analytical. His brain never stops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Lee is among a cadre of notable filmmakers whom Rothman has worked repeatedly with (including on <em>The Ice Storm<\/em> at Searchlight).<strong> <\/strong>Others include Steven Spielberg, Baz Luhrmann and Danny Boyle. And he formed a bond with Quentin Tarantino after winning a bidding war to make 2019\u2019s <em>Once Upon a Time in Hollywood<\/em>. \u201cThe best filmmakers, the people you really want to be in business with, don\u2019t want to be yessed to death. You must be very supportive, and yet be honest,\u201d says Rothman. \u201cThey want experience, which is undervalued in Hollywood. One of the things I\u2019m really proud of is I do a lot of repeat business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    On the IP front, Rothman backed this year\u2019s <em>Uncharted<\/em>, based on Sony\u2019s PlayStation video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>, which grossed a better-than-expected $401 million, and refitted the <em>Jumanji<\/em> and <em>Ghostbuster<\/em> franchises. He credits his vice chairman Sanford Panitch, whom he\u2019s worked with for 20 years, for exploiting characters in the Spidey universe, resulting in <em>Venom<\/em> and the 2024 pic<em> Madame Web<\/em>, not to mention Phil Lord and Christopher Miller\u2019s animated <em>Spider-Verse <\/em>(a sequel is due out in 2023). There\u2019s no official word regarding when the next live-action Spider-Man will hit theaters, but it\u2019s a no-brainer. \u201cYou bet,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen you can expect it, I don\u2019t know.
