Katz<\/strong>\u2018 black comedy <strong>Cheap Thrills<\/strong> is a nasty little thriller that serves as a spotlight of sorts on the nature of greed, competition &#038; the depths of human depravity. Considering the subject matter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a> (by <strong>Trent Haaga<\/strong> &#038; <strong>David Chirchirillo<\/strong>), the fact that it\u2019s as entertaining as it is makes for quite a pleasant (if <em>gruesome<\/em>) surprise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-6\" height=\"236\"  src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-6.jpg\"  width=\"450\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Craig (<strong>Pat Healy<\/strong>) forces himself to leave the kisses of his wife, Audrey (<strong>Amanda Fuller<\/strong>) &#038; the confines of his bed to go to work but upon leaving his apartment he not only finds an eviction notice stuck to his front door but he\u2019s also laid off from his job as a mechanic at a local auto shop. He doesn\u2019t tell Amanda straight away though, preferring to meet up with old friend Vince (<strong>Ethan Embry<\/strong>) at a local bar for some drinks. While they\u2019re chatting about the respective failures in their lives they meet eccentric couple Colin (<strong>David Koechner<\/strong>) &#038; Violet (<strong>Sara Paxton<\/strong>) who are in the bar celebrating Violet\u2019s birthday. Almost im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely, Craig and Vince find out that not only are the eccentric couple they\u2019ve just met extremely wealthy, they\u2019re also gamblers \u2013 but it\u2019s not the sort of gambling that Craig and Vince are familiar with.<span id=\"more-83211\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-1\" height=\"253\"  src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-1.jpg\"  width=\"450\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>It all starts innocuously enough with a bet of which of the guys can get a waitress to slap him first but the nasty (&#038; funny) script wastes little time getting to the darker aspects of the human condition and what truly desperate people would do for money, regardless of their pride, dignity or relationships. Craig is a failed author and it\u2019s obvious from the look on his face as he\u2019s being let go from his mechanic job that he feels like his failure as a husband\/father is now complete. Healy gives an especially measured yet manic performance here as Craig, who faces most of the indignities heaped upon our unlucky duo. Embry\u2019s character was a bit more problematic for me since I disliked him as soon as he appeared onscreen, he just feels like a scumbag from the get go but that\u2019s the way the character was written and Embry embraces the inherent distaste the character inspires fully and impressively.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-3\" height=\"234\"  src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-3.jpg\"  width=\"450\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sara Paxton\u2019s<\/strong> character doesn\u2019t do too much in the film besides sit extremely still and watch while the guys attempt to win wagers that get more and more distasteful but her silence belies a power over those gullible enough to be swayed by what she &#038; her husband are putting down. She displays this power during one scene in which Craig is offered a tidy sum of cash if he\u2019ll have sex with her immediately. Craig initially demurs but the lure of money and Violet\u2019s come hither stare break him down and as she mounts him, Violet\u2019s furtive glances at both Vince and her husband during the act exemplify a woman who\u2019s used to being on top\u2026and in total control.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-4\" height=\"254\"  src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-4.jpg\"  width=\"450\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s <strong>David Koechner\u2019s<\/strong> performance that lifts <strong>Cheap Thrills<\/strong> to a higher plane. Known more for his comedic roles (<strong>Anchorman<\/strong> (2004) &#038; <strong>Anchorman 2<\/strong> (2014) he gives a truly nuanced &#038; more than slightly scary performance as Colin. His facial expressions never really change much from looking bored to being really excited but there\u2019s a palpable sense of menace in every line of dialog that he recites that makes him far more dangerous than his appearance might suggest. Together Koechner &#038; Paxton might look to be mismatched on a visual level but as the film progresses you\u2019ll realize that they\u2019re perfectly cast and truly memorable indeed. The way they hold each other hands during one of the more intense scenes in the film is especially telling, their hands are trembling excitedly as they get closer together and once together all sense of tremulousness is gone as they squeeze together tightly as if to congratulate each other for managing to debase two more people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-2\" height=\"228\"  src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-2.jpg\"  width=\"450\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>The wagers that are placed during the film are things I\u2019ll leave to all of you to discover but if you\u2019re familiar with the previously mentioned anthology series then you know all about one of them (although this time it\u2019s a good sight gorier than ever produced before). There\u2019s also one especially stomach turning wager that reminded me of a similar scene from <strong>Theater Of Blood<\/strong> (1973) which featured what I consider to be <strong>Vincent Price\u2019<\/strong> greatest film performance of all time. This film gets especially nasty at times, and I mean really, really nasty. Forewarned is forearmed I always say.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-2\" height=\"228\"  src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cheap-Thrills-2014-movie-E.L.-Katz-2.jpg\"  width=\"450\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>Director Katz has a nice sense of shot composition and it comes across even thru the handheld shaky cam scenes that some might find mildly annoying. Cinematography by <strong>Andrew Wheeler<\/strong> &#038; <strong>Sebastian Winters<\/strong> is smooth and takes advantage of the dim lighting throughout most of the film to give an especially unnerving aura to the proceedings. Scripters Haaga and Chirchirillo have taken a tried and true formula and upped its ante until it becomes a scary, but funny, slice of pop entertainment that sadly probably won\u2019t be recognized as such by the public at large.
