During the hour-long conversation, Harmon shared how he and co-writer Andrew Guest have been grappling with returning to the show\u2019s characters in a new decade, where audiences have grown along with their stances on comedy and topical issues like (paintball) guns in schools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cAndrew and I just started asking ourselves what would this thing be?\u201d he said. \u201cThe years since stopping <em>Community<\/em> have been transformative for me. So it\u2019s not as easy as just putting my head right back up my butt and having everything be exactly where I left it. Let alone would it be as easy as that to please fans who have grown for 10 years since the show went off the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The conclusion, Harmon says, was that time was not their enemy. \u201cThe sweet spot that we ended up going through philosophically was, \u2018Aha! You know what everybody likes to see is that time has changed, and so have the lives of the characters and the world that we all share with them,\u201d he said. \u201cThe character has adapted \u2014 they reacted to a changing world the same as we all have \u2014\u00a0but they are unmistakeably themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But before they reached that point, they contended with answering what, and more importantly what not, to do for the plot line \u2014 especially when it came to having the movie\u2019s story resemble episodes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> that were \u201cgenre homages,\u201d like \u201cEpidemiology\u201d and \u201cA Fistful of Paintballs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cDo we really think that it would be a good idea for the<em> Community<\/em> movie to be a paintball episode? I think it\u2019s one of the first things to rule out because it\u2019s the first thing off the top of your head and that\u2019s an issue with the <em>Community<\/em> movie concept. We did a lot of episodes where, from page one to page 30, you are joyfully locked in as a construct that isn\u2019t a traditional sitcom narrative but is, in fact, rather through the lens of David Fincher or [Martin] Scorsese or more importantly, through the lens of one of the character\u2019s perceptions,\u201d he said. \u201cI got to kind of rule that out. Maybe a better writer wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The writer and producer noted that there was even deliberation about whether the film could attempt a story more tied to the literal reality of what happened to the show \u2014\u00a0like Greendale Community College closing down for 10 years. But doing so, he said, felt like it might make too much of the movie \u201cunrecognizable\u201d to <em>Community<\/em>\u2018s longtime fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cThat\u2019d be an easy, natural thing because write what you know. The campus is the show, the show\u2019s been off the air. OK, but now, are you going to spend your movie painting and fixing windows and in abandoned hallways without students going to and fro?\u201d he pondered. \u201cI think that a huge part of returning to <em>Community<\/em> that the average lover of <em>Community<\/em> would want to feel is that Greendale is a place and that includes daylight, class schedules, lockers, backpacks, background actors and faculty functioning as an institution. So you\u2019re not going to do anything terribly clever with the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Despite taking things off the table, Harmon says their approach <em>Community<\/em>\u2018s return was a careful dance of not being reductive or repetitive, while still being familiar. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI think it\u2019s easy enough to say we came around to the healthy wisdom, which is we have to make sure that this movie \u2014 that it\u2019s premise alone \u2014 doesn\u2019t prohibit a pretty long list of things that you might want to get out of a <em>Community<\/em> movie,\u201d Harmon added. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot easier for me to rule stuff out than to tell you what we\u2019re pursuing because I want people to be part of that conversation [and] maybe because I have anxiety about people thinking that I\u2019m not thinking hard enough about something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He noted that some of those anxieties have \u201cseized me,\u201d with the producer going into a \u201ctailspin\u201d over whether he\u2019s over or underthinking the plot, particularly through the lens of answering, \u201cWhat do people want?\u201d And Harmon acknowledges that he\u2019s not the only one that\u2019s been on the rollercoaster around trying to get this movie made \u201cevery day since the show stopped pretty much.\u201d He pointed to how \u201ctomorrow\u201d in Hollywood speak isn\u2019t a literal or consistent unit of measurement, which has complicated the long journey to the screen for fans. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cThat\u2019s what makes the movie the hard thing to talk about. It\u2019s not so much about betraying secrets or anything like that. It\u2019s that there\u2019s so much there that you can\u2019t control, certainly including timescale,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I learned over time was you may get a little dopamine spike from sharing some good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> with people, but then if a year and a half goes by, that feels like \u2026 you can passively traumatize somebody.
